Taste bud papillae on the retromolar mucosa of the rat, mouse and golden hamster.

The retromolar mucosa of the rat, mouse and golden hamster was observed by light and scanning electron microscopy. Numerous taste bud papillae, each of which formed a low round eminence containing one to several taste buds, were present in the posterior region of the retromolar mucosa, and were especially concentrated in the vicinity of the orifices of the molar glands. This topographical coincidence suggests that the retromolar mucosa of these animals has a functional role as a taste organ. Microridges, arranged in various patterns and small pits, were observed on the surface of the keratinized epithelium of the rat and mouse retromolar mucosa. It appears that the development of numerous microridges is adapted for varied stimuli in the oral cavity.

[Case of double primary carcinoma of the lung and ureter].

A 73-year-old man visited our hospital complaining of chest distress in September 1979. A chest X-ray film showed a tumor shadow in the left lung and left inferior lobectomy was performed. The tumor measured 50 X 40 X 30 mm; it was diagnosed as large cell carcinoma. In November 1980 the patient suddenly noticed macroscopic hematuria although there had been no microscopic hematuria at his first visit. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous pyelography confirmed complete obstruction of the left ureter and he underwent left ureteronephrectomy. The papillary tumor, measuring 23 cm, was diagnosed as transitional cell carcinoma.

[Experimental and clinical studies on latamoxef in the perinatal period].

Pharmacokinetics and clinical studies on the perinatal use of latamoxef (LMOX, Shiomarin), a new parenteral oxacephem antibiotic, were carried out and the results obtained were as follows: After LMOX was intravenously given to mother at a dose of 1 g, the umbilical cord serum concentration of LMOX reached to peak with 18.4 micrograms/ml in 1 hour 20 minutes and its concentration was higher than the maternal serum after 2 hours 25 minutes and decreased gradually (T 1/2 beta = 1.61 hours). The materno-fetal transfer of LMOX was 71.0%. LMOX showed the good transfer as well as other cephalosporins. After LMOX was intravenously administered to mother at a dose of 1 g, LMOX concentration in milk wasn't detectable up to 12 hours. LMOX was intravenously administered to 18 cases with premature rupture of membrane, at a daily dose of 2 g for 3--6 days. The prophylactic effects were observed in all cases, both mother and neonate. No adverse effects were observed in mother except for 1 case with low grade abnormality of S-GPT, transiently. We observed 3 neonates with jaundice (total bilirubin greater than or equal to 17.0 mg/dl) probably not related to LMOX. It is concluded that LMOX is less toxic, safe and clinically useful antibiotic for the treatment of perinatal infections.

[Carcinoid tumor of the stomach].

A 49-year-old female complaining of hematemesis was examined by emergency endoscopy. Multiple gastric erosions and ulcers which had healed after 6 weeks, except for one ulcer, were found. A biopsy of this unhealed ulcer revealed gastric carcinoma. Enucleation of the tumor was performed because of multiple metastases to the liver, lung and the lymph nodes. The high serum alpha-fetoprotein level (800 ng/ml) and the size of a coin lesion in an X-ray film of the chest before the enucleation decreased post- operatively.

Serum total cholesterol, triglyceride level, and dietary intake in Japanese students aged 15 years.

The authors surveyed serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels in 238 male and 217 female students aged 15 years in Osaka, Japan, in 1977, as well as dietary intake, using a 24-hour record in 81 male and 61 female students. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels of Japanese students were 163.6 mg/dl and 81.7 mg/dl, respectively, for males, and 182.2 mg/dl and 78.9 mg/dl for females. For female students, those who participated in a school sports club regularly during the previous three years had cholesterol levels 10 mg/dl lower than the subjects who had not participated in a sports club; these active students also had smaller skinfold thickness, although there was no difference in other anthropometric measurements. Although the dietary intake of Japanese students was found to be westernized, compared with that of Japanese adults, Japanese students reported low fat intake (25-30% of energy), high polyunsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratio (1.1-1.2), and high carbohydrate intake (55-61% of energy), differing considerably from US students.

Dietary intake and serum total cholesterol level: their relationship to different lifestyles in several Japanese populations.

Serum total cholesterol level and dietary intake were surveyed 1975--1977 in six Japanese population groups with different lifestyles, including groups in both rural (Akita and Kochi) and urban (Osaka) areas. Clerical workers in Osaka, who had the most westernized lifestyle of all the study groups, had the highest mean serum total cholesterol level (202 mg/dl for men ages 40--49 and 50--59 years), while farmers in Akita had the lowest mean serum total cholesterol level (163 mg/dl for men 40--49 years old, 159 mg/dl for men 50--59 years old, 165 mg/dl for men 60--69 years old). Nutrient intake data for mean ages 40--59 years showed 23% of calories from fat for clerical workers in Osaka, the highest among the study groups, whereas farmers in Akita showed a low level of 14%. The ratio of dietary polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids was over 1.1 for all groups. Cholesterol intake was 339--487 mg/day. Total carbohydrate as a percentage of calories was 53--65%; 75--80% of carbohydrate energy was ingested from cereals. Sugar accounted for less than 3.5% of total calories. In the cross-group correlation analysis between dietary lipid intake and serum total cholesterol, a significant strong positive correlation was found between the dietary lipid factor (phi) of Keys et al. and the mean serum total cholesterol level. A weak but significant correlation was observed between the dietary lipid factor and serum total cholesterol for individual inhabitants of Osaka.

Histopathology of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis spontaneously occurring in aged KK mice.

Histopathological findings of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis occurring spontaneously in aged KK mice (72 weeks of age) were described. The lung tissues examined were obtained from the mice used for a one-year toxicity study of some oral hypoglycemic drugs, but there was no relationship between the incidence of the disease and the drug treatment. The disease occurred in 67 of 319 males (21.0%) and 124 of 284 females (43.7%). The gross lesions of the lungs were solitary or multiple nodules. Microscopically, the lesions developed in the peribronchial areas and were well-circumscribed. The initial lesions consisted of the aggregation of foamy cells in the alveoli. In the advanced lesions, amorphous substance resulting from destructed foamy cells and proteinous material accumulated in the alveoli. In the more advanced lesions, neutrophils and nuclear fragments were contained in the proteinous material and some of the alveolar walls were thickened with cell infiltration, fibrosis and so-called epithelialization. The etiology of the present condition was unknown.
