The present studies were carried out to clarify the indigenous bacterial flora in the female internal genitalia and surrounding tissues and the pathogenesis of parametritis. Twenty nine patients with uterine tumors which consisted of sixteen carcinomas and thirteen benign tumors underwent abdominal total hysterectomies. Each tissue aseptically collected from the uterus and adnexae was cultured for 48 hours under aerobic or anaerobic conditions and the bacterial species were isolated and identified. In benign uterine tumors, anaerobic bacteria were isolated in six patients and aerobic or anaerobic bacteria were identified In the endometrium, fallopian tube and parametrium of five of the patients. In a group of carcinoma in situ (stage 0), many bacteria were isolated in two patients after conization. In the uterine carcinomas, as the stage advanced, the rate of bacterial isolation from parametrium and lymph node became higher. The rate of anaerobic bacterial isolation, except for one from the vagina, was nine out of sixteen patients with carcinomas but three out of thirteen patients with benign tumors. The results revealed that the bacterial flora in the vagina spread to the internal genital organ and surrounding tissues via the ascending or cervical lymphatic pathway and remained there as nonpathologically indigenous bacterial flora. These results suggest that these indigenous bacterial flora in the internal genitalia and the surrounding tissue may cause an opportunistic infection.

We report a 56-year-old female with anorectal malignant melanoma reduced subjective symptoms by transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE). She had five-month history of melena and epigastric fullness. The physical examination revealed anorectal tumor and hepatomegaly. Pathological examination of the tumor and liver CT scan showed anoreectal malignant melanoma with liver metastasis. Surgical excision of the anorectal lesion and TAE against the liver metastasis improved subjective symptoms remarkably. Liver CT scan after TAE showed necrosis of the metastatic tumors. TAE is effective for palliative treatment of liver metastasis of anorectal malignant melanoma.
This study presents measurements of serum vitamin D metabolites, calcium and phosphorus as well as measurements of the equilibrium dissociation constant for duodenal 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor in 15-, 18-, 19-, and 20-day chick embryos in comparison to that in 1- and 118-day-old chicks and to vitamin D-deficient chicks. The present results showed that: (a) serum 1,25(OH)2D and 24,25(OH)2D levels rise from 15 and 18 to days 19 and 20 of embryonic development while serum phosphate levels are stable; (b) serum calcium levels rise at hatching to adult levels; (c) the duodenal 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor is detectable in 15-day-old embryo and has a Kd similar to that of 118-day-old vitamin D-replete chicks; and (d) the activity of 1,25(OH)2D3 receptor in chick duodenal cytosol is maximal at hatching.
Postnatal cytogenesis in rat somatosensory cortex was examined by the technique combining light microscopic autoradiography with electron microscopy. Tritiated thymidine was injected intraperitoneally to rats on different days (0-21 days). All animals were sacrificed on the twenty-fifth day after birth. Coronal slices including somatosensory cortex were embedded in epoxy resin. Semithin sections for autoradiography and ultrathin ones for electron microscopy were made alternately. The labeled cortical cells were found mainly in the cases injected with [3H]thymidine during the first and the second weeks. Examination of laminar distribution of the labeled cells revealed that the cells in deeper laminae were labeled on earlier postnatal days than those in more superficial laminae. The labeled cells were examined with electron microscope to identify their nature. By this, it was revealed that ultrastructural morphology of the labeled cells were that of glial cells (either astrocyte or oligodendrocyte). Time and space pattern of this neocortical postnatal gliogenesis shows the tendency of the inside-out sequence, though the pattern is not as distinctive as that of prenatal neocortical neurogenesis. The relationships between the pattern of gliogenesis and the maturation of cortical neurons is suggested.
We have attempted to determine if the resistance of the X-linked hypophosphatemic mouse to the actions of 1,25(OH)2D3 is due to abnormal cytosolic receptors for this hormone. Cytoplasmic 1,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D3 [1,25(OH)3D3] receptors were demonstrated in hypophosphatemic (HYP) mouse tissues including intestine, kidney and testis. Cytosol preparations from 14 murine tissues were prepared using hypertonic buffer and incubated for three hours at 0 C with 1,25(OH)2 [23,24(n)-(-3)H]D3 ([3H]-1,25(OH)2D3). The results of studies using 5-20% sucrose density gradients revealed th at cytosol preparations from intestine, kidney and testis exhibited a 3.2 S peak which ws specific for 1,25(OH)2D3. Scatchard analysis of intestinal, renal and testicular cytosol preparations of Hyp mice revealed a single class of noninteracting binding sites with a range of equilibrium dissociation constants (KD) of 0.9-3.5 X 10(-10) M, and a range of specific binding sites of 15-317 fmol/mg protein. There were no significant differences in values of KD, and numbers of specific binding sites among Hyp and control mice. We conclude the reported resistance of Hyp mice to vitamin D is not due to abnormal 1,24(OH)2D3 receptor in Hyp mouse.
We had reported the fundamental study on the utility of a new cephem antibiotic, cefmetazole (CMZ). On the basis of the results we administered CMZ to patients to investigate its clinical utility in this study. 1. CMZ was administered to 53 patients including 4 infants. They consisted of 30 cases of acute tonsillitis, 10 of peritonsillar abscess, 10 of laryngitis or pharyngitis, and 3 of sinusitis. 2. One of 2 g CMZ was administered to an adult patient except for l case and 0.5 g to an infant patient once or twice daily for at least 3 days. The method of administration was one shot intravenous injection, intravenous drip infusion or intramuscular injection. 3. The strict criteria for evaluating the efficacy of a drug were made and used for judging the efficacy of CMZ. 4. CMZ was clinically effective in 100% of patients with acute tonsillitis, 100% of those with peritonsillar abscess, 90% of those with laryngitis or pharyngitis, and 67% of those with sinusitis. 5. Bacteriologically, a single sort of bacterium was isolated in most cases of acute tonsillitis, laryngitis and pharyngitis and in the half of cases of peritonsillar abscess. Two and more sorts of bacteria were isolated in the other cases. The main bacteria isolated were beta-Streptococcus, S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae. Anaerobic bacteria, mostly Peptococcus spp. and Peptostreptococcus spp., were detected in peritonsillar abscess. 6. The clinical results agreed with the clinicobacteriological results. All the bacteria detected before treatment of CMZ disappeared. CMZ also acted effectively in cases in which H. influenzae was suspected to be a causative organism. 7. The present results of CMZ treatment were similar to those of cefazolin (CEZ) treatment published so far. 8. Thus, CMZ was confirmed fundamentally and clinically to be a very useful drug for infection of the upper respiratory tract.
