Calmodulin activities are significantly increased in both uninvolved and involved epidermis in psoriasis.

In order to elucidate a part of calmodulin actions in the hyperproliferative state in human epidermis, calmodulin activities in the psoriatic and in the normal human epidermis were determined using calmodulin-deficient phosphodiesterase from bovine heart and purified pig skin epidermal calmodulin as a standard. Skin samples were obtained from 11 normal healthy controls and from both the uninvolved and involved regions of 8 nonconsanguineous psoriatic patients. Pure epidermal samples, prepared by the microdissection method, were used for calmodulin assays. Normal human epidermis contained 270 +/- 13 ng/mg dry weight, whereas calmodulin activities were significantly increased in psoriatic epidermis, 412 +/- 29 ng/mg dry weight for the uninvolved epidermis and 747 +/- 46 ng/mg dry weight for the involved epidermis, respectively. These results suggest that calmodulin may play an important role in cell proliferation in human epidermis.

Three siblings with Peters' anomaly.

Clinical findings of three siblings with Peters' anomaly and congenital heart disease, and histopathological findings of the second child were reported. These three cases all underwent operation for secondary glaucoma. Schlemm's canal was not observed in the first and second child. Autosomal recessive inheritance was considered the possible cause. As for the mechanism by which this disease is produced, it is surmised that abnormal development of the eye is caused by hypoxia due to ophthalmic circulatory insufficiency in the embryogenic period, and that the already formed lens shifts forward causing this disease, judging from the fact that there was severe tetralogy of Fallot in the first and the third case, and VSD + PDA in the second case, and from the histopathological findings.

Mucin-producing carcinoma of the thyroid gland--a case report and review of the literature.

Mucin-producing carcinoma of the thyroid is rare and its histogenesis has been debated. The first case was reported by Diaz-Perez et al. (1976). We herein report the sixth case of mucin-producing carcinoma of the thyroid which was discovered in a 72-year-old Japanese woman. This patient was admitted with a 10-year history of a lump in the right anterior neck, which started to grow suddenly two months before diagnosis. The pathological diagnosis at biopsy was anaplastic carcinoma. A course of radiation therapy followed by chemotherapy resulted in no response. She died of two months after admission. At autopsy, the main tumor was found in the right lobe of the thyroid with metastasis to the lungs and liver. Histologically, the tumor was composed of mucin-secreting glandular cells and nests of epidermoid cells with keratinization and infrequent formation of intercellular bridges. Mucin was demonstrated both intracellulary and extracellulary.

[Clinical efficacy of a quadruple combination chemotherapy with ACNU, adriamycin, methotrexate, and prednisolone for patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, who were refractory to VEPA (P) treatment].

A quadruple combination chemotherapy with ACNU, adriamycin, methotrexate and prednisolone (AAAP), was performed on 9 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, who had been previously treated with a VEPA (P) regimen. Complete remission rate was 44% (4/9) and, in four other patients, the tumor was decreased in size. Complete remission duration was from 30 days to over 390 days. Median survival time was 105 days. Myelosuppressive toxicity was severe. In eight patients, WBC counts were less than 3,000/mm3. In six patients, platelet counts were less than 100,000/mm3. An AAAP regimen is useful in relapse or for resistant forms of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

[A study of cefoperazone prostatic tissue levels: difference between the gland and capsule].

Prostatic tissue levels of Cefoperazone (CPZ) were determined in 34 patients with prostatic hypertrophy after the intravenous administration of 1 g of CPZ. Prostatic tissue levels of CPZ decreased slowly with time and the elimination half-life was 125 to 171 minutes. The CPZ concentration in the surgical capsule was higher than that in the gland. As compared with the minimal inhibitory concentrations of CPZ, the prostatic tissue levels were considered high enough for the treatment of post-prostatectomy and bacterial prostatitis. Neither the pathological type of prostatic hypertrophy, that of infiltrations, nor the weight of the removed tissue was correlated to the tissue levels of CPZ.

An autopsy case of Tay-Sachs disease--with special reference to axonal swellings of the central nervous system and freeze-fracture replication studies of the membranous cytoplasmic bodies.

The following is a report of the light and electron microscopic findings of the axonal swellings of the central nervous system and the freeze-fracture replication studies of the membranous cytoplasmic bodies in Tay-Sachs disease. The axonal swellings were observed mainly in the subthalamic nucleus, thalamus, globus pallidus, red nucleus, dentate nucleus, inferior olivary nucleus, nucleus gracilis, spinal anterior nucleus and so on. They contained many electron dense bodies and neurofilaments. Typical membranous cytoplasmic bodies were not seen in these axonal swellings. The freeze-fracture replication studies demonstrated that the membranous cytoplasmic bodies were composed of parallel stacks or concentric whorls of lamellae at an interval of 5 to 6 nm, with membrane-associated particles of 8 to 10 nm diameters on their protoplasmic face. It was postulated that the membranous cytoplasmic bodies constituted various compound lipids including the GM2-ganglioside and some proteins.
