Skin reactions to propylene glycol.

Propylene glycol (PG), ethylene glycol (EG), and polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400) were tested, as is, in a total of 1,556 cases of eczema using the chamber test method. All the year round, the number of positive reactions to PG was 12.5% to EG 4.9%, and to PEG 400 0.3%. A total of 30% of the positive reactions to PG were allergic in appearance. Also the new fatty alcohol-PG bases of Metosyn ointment and Topilar ointment as well as Metosyn ointment (fluocinonide) itself provoked reactions in a great number of patients with positive reactions to PG, as is. The reactions to PG were considered to be truly allergic in four cases. In them, positive reactions were elicited by testing with high dilutions of PG and by applying the glycol in the patients' armpits as an open test. It is concluded that PG and topical preparations containing it in high concentrations should not be used with occlusion, and that allergic reactions must be watched.

Immunohistological development of the Kveim reaction.

A follow-up of immunohistological events of Kveim reactions was made by taking biopsies from Kveim test sites at various intervals. Immunoglobulins were present in one half of the specimens taken at 2-7 days, but not earlier. 2-week-old reactions showed immunoglobulins in 50% of the cases and older reactions in 79%. Out of 52 specimens examined with specific conjugates, IgM was demonstrated in 42, IgG in one, and IgA in one reaction. Complement (C3) was seen in 83% out of 47 specimens examined. Complement and immunoglobulins were found in vessel walls but not elsewhere in the tissues.

Skin manifestations in human yersiniosis.

In 1969-1973, acute yersiniosis was diagnosed in 30 cases of erythema nodosum (EN), in 6 cases of EN and simultaneous erythema multiforme (EM), in one case of EN and erythema figuratum, in one case of EM, and in one case of drug eruption-like exanthema, respectively. During these years, 180 patients with EN due to other causes were seen. The most marked difference in the clinical course between yersiniosis and other cases was the duration of the eruption. EN nodules in yersinia EN faded away in 4 weeks in all but one case while the 4-week cure rate among the other patients with EN was only 37%. There were two types of EM lesions, namely cockade-like lesions and vesicopapules. They usually appeared some days before or together with EN nodules and they disappeared within 2 weeks without any scarring. Yersiniosis was caused by Y. enterocolitica serotype 3 in 19 cases. Y.ent. serotype 9 in 17 cases, and Y.pseudotuberculosis in 3 cases. Of the patients, 21 suffered from abdominal pains and/or diarrhoea prior to skin manifestations, but 11 had no pregastrointestinal symptoms resembling those of yersiniosis.

Isolation of a mycoplasma from sarcoid tissue.

Using a modified cell-free culture medium, a mycoplasma was isolated from sarcoid lymph nodes in two cases and from sarcoid skin lesions in four out of seven cases of chronic sarcoidosis. Growth inhibition tests showed that the isolates were related to Mycoplasma orale type 1. By the indirect haemagglutination method, 244 cases of definite or probable sarcoidosis, 160 patients with other diseases, and 355 blood donors were tested for antibodies against an isolated mycoplasma (strain 215-M). Titres [unk] 16 were found in 14% of the patients with sarcoidosis and in 8% of the patients with other diseases but only in 0.6% of the blood donors. The proportion of patients with high antibody titres among those with sarcoidosis and erythema nodosum was smaller (8%) than among those with other forms of sarcoidosis (17%). The role of the mycoplasmas isolated from sarcoid tissues remains obscure, but it is possible that these organisms are only an expression of altered immunity in sarcoidosis.
