Localization of prostaglandin on the plasmalemma of rabbit sperm.

Prostaglandin and prostaglandin receptors were localized on unwashed ejaculate rabbit sperm utilizing ferritin conjugated antibody to prostaglandin. Reaction was obtained over the acrosomal portion of the plasma membrane, with a greater aggregation over the apex of the head. The remainder of the head plasmalemma and flagellum showed no deposits of of reaction product. The reaction did not occur if the sperm were washed prior to incubation with the labelled antisera. However enhanced binding of ferritin was demonstrated if washed sperm were pre-incubated in PGE1. No reaction was seen in similar studies with human sperm.

An experimental study on the significance of muscle tissue interposition on fracture healing.

Ten ulnae of mongrel dogs were osteotomized and a 3 to 5 mm cylindrical segment of bone removed from each shaft. In 10 ulnae of the opposite forelimb, living muscle tissue was placed in the resection site. The control ulnae (Set 1, Set 2) revealed 60 per cent unions, while the experimental ulnae revealed 100 per cent non-unions as determined by radiological and histological examination. Although necrotic muscle will be invaded by primitive bone, healing is certainly delayed or does not occur. A large muscle mass contributes a barrier too large to be successfully incorporated into the healing process of a fracture of the shaft of a long bone. On the basis of this experiment fractures should be opened and obstructing tissue removed whenever conservative measures fail to remove muscle interposition.

Endometrial regeneration after voluntary abortion.

Endometrial biopsies were obtained on postabortal days 1 to 36 in 42 women without contraception, in 28 women using oral contraceptives, and in 12 women with intrauterine devices. Tissue samples were examined for day-to-day sequential changes, specifically: a)regenerative, repair, proliferative and secretory activity, b)involution of pregnancy changes, c)inflammation. In the absence of contraception, the endometrium promptly regenerated. The earliest evidence of ovulation was on day 9. One-third of the women ovulated before the first period. Incomplete placental and decidual involution was seen in 45% of patients, but its frequency progressively decreased toward the end of observation. Inflammation seen in 26% was limited to the retained decidua and was, therefore, thought to be a reactive rather than an infectious phenomenon. In women taking oral contraceptives, initial regeneration was also prompt. "On pill" changes resembled the nonpostabortal picture except for a few cases of cystic glandular dilation, or Arias-Stella-like phenomena. Retained decidua and inflammation were more frequent (75% and 68%) than in the noncontraceptive group, and the diminishing trend was not observed. In the intrauterine device group, inflammation was more frequent (83%) than in the other two groups and was not limited to the decidua.

Prophylactic antibiotics in cesarean section.

Using a random selection procedure, 100 patients were evaluated in order to determine the value of prophylactic antibiotics in cesarean section. All patients were evaluated for febrile morbidity, and specific infection sites were recorded. Significant differences were found between the treated and control groups and between cesarean sections performed prior to the onset of labor and after the onset of labor.
