We report on the successful surgical resection of an aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery. The saccular nature of the aneurysm and evidence of celiac axis occlusion in this patient posed an additional challenge in the successful surgical treatment.
Herein we review 48 acceptable cases of idiopathic regression of metastases from renal cell carcinoma culled from the literature and present 3 additional cases. The data are analyzed and the issue of organ specificity in coping with metastases is discussed.
At 7 days of age, rats received lesions of the septal nuclei or control operations. The rats received 30 hr of training on a schedule that differentially reinforced low rates of responding (DRL 20 sec), 1 hr per day, beginning at either 27 or 96 days of age. At 126 days of age, all subjects received 10 additional training sessions. After operant testing, all subjects were tested on spontaneous alternation, spatial reversal, and passive avoidance. Results indicated that on a DRL 20-sec schedule subjects that received lesions of the septum neonatally and were tested at different ages performed in a similar manner. Approximately 50% of the subjects with lesions of the septal nuclei reached efficiency levels comparable with those of normal controls. When tested for retention, these efficient subjects still performed similarly to normal subjects. Subjects with septal lesions were facilitated in the acquisition of a spatial habit, were deficient in spatial habit reversal, were less likely to demonstrate spontaneous alternation, and were deficient in passive avoidance. It was concluded that neonatal lesions of the septal nuclei produce permanent behavioral impairments on a dirersity of measures and that although juvenile animals with limbic system damage often manifest behaviors different from adult subjects, the difference was not evident during operant testing.

Sixty young women who presented at a general-practice health centre had their medical and social history taken by a computer before having an interview with the doctor. The average length of the automated interview was 90 minutes for the 54 patients who completed the programme, during which an average of 211 questions were answered. The patients found this method acceptable and we think that one of the main reasons for this was that the computer programme was so designed that the patients felt that the doctor was involved throughout. The computer/patient interview also appeared to have therapeutic benefits, and the computer's summary of the history was a sensitive indicator of those topics about which the patient was most concerned. This combination enabled the doctor to communicate more quickly and in greater depth in the time available. In effect, the time which the doctor could spend with the patient was magnified. We suggest that the benefits of this system for taking a history from a patient, of which one is the fact that any language or combination of languages can be used, could be extended to all classes of society.

Over the last 2 years at Metropolitan Hospital Medical Center 245 diabetic women have been seen on the obstetric service. This complication of pregnancy comprises 7.9 per cent of 3,076 deliveries, resulting in an over-all uncorrected perinatal mortality rate of 2.9 per cent. We believe that early detection and strict rigid control of diabetes is the key to improved perinatal outcome. This article presents the classification, diagnosis, and management which have led to these results.
Zonaless rabbit ova, exposed to Concanavalin A or Wheat Germ Agglutinin, then to uterine capacitated sperm produce pronuclear, 2 and 4 stage embryos that are indistinguishable from controls. Absence of cortical granules indicates that the ova were fertilized and not merely activated. Survival of lectin-bearing receptors during the period necessary for fertilization was evaluated in ova marked with ferritin-conjugated lectin.

In five patients with atheromatous embolic disease, the diagnosis was made before death in four -- on the basis of cholesterol emboli in the retina in three and from renal pathologic features in 1. Muscle biopsy demonstrated emboli in one patient, and emboli were seen in the vessels of amputated toes in two. All patients died of renal failure, but there was evidence of multisystem involvement in addition. Autopsy in four cases showed characteristic cholesterol emboli in many organs.
Intrauterine hypoxia/asphyxia is an unchallenged cause of perinatal death, but whether sublethal degrees of hypoxia result frequently in brain damage in surviving infants is less certain. To test this hypothesis, obstetric patients with abruptio placentae, placenta previa, and prolapse of the umbilical cord were computer matched on several factors with normal control patients to determine the degree of risk of lower 4 year Stanford-Binet I. Q. scores or abnormalities on the 4 year fine motor and gross motor testings. The mean I. Q. score of babies born of mothers with one of these complications was no different from that of the normal controls. Similarly negative results were recorded on the 4 year fine motor and gross motor testings. Children of low birth weight in either group experienced lower I. Q. scores and higher risk of abnormal findings on the motor tests at 4 years than the babies of mature birth weight. Intrauterine hypoxia/asphyxia apparently is not a major cause of neurologic dysfunction in the surviving child.
Fertilized and unfertilized rabbit ova exposed to ruthenium red with the zona intact or after mechanical removal, for the demonstration of mucopolysaccharides on the surface coat. Ova were also exposed to Concanavalin A. Ruthenium red bound strongly to elements of the zona and increased the opacity of the plasmalemma. There was no notable change in staining of the vitellus following fertilization. Although there were ruthenium red stained bodies resembling cortical granules in crypts in the plasmalemma, there was no evidence for cortical granule extrusion of mucopolysaccharides. The Concanavalin reaction was seen over both unfertilized and fertilized ova, demonstrating receptors for terminal alpha-D-mannopyranosyl, alpha-D-glycopyranosyl, beta-D-fructofuranyosyl residues. The deposit on the fertilized egg surface was enormously enhanced indicating a change in the distribution of receptor sites.
