[Effect of 2 methods of demineralization on the on the preservation of glycoproteins and proteoglycans in the intertubular and peritubular dentin in the horse].

The effect of 2 methods of demineralization on the preservation of proteoglycans and glycoproteins was studied in the intertubular and peritubular dentine of the horse. The specimens embedded in Epon were demineralized with a 2% acid formic solution (Bonucci and Gheradi, 1975). Other fragments were treated with an organic solution of EDTA alkylammonium salt (Scott and Kyffin, 1979). These methods preserved in a satisfactory way these labile organic components. In the intertubular dentine, glycoproteins and proteoglycans were also identified, either associated with collagen fibres as a glue and granules, or present in the interfibrillar spaces. In the peritubular dentine, amorphous material formed a fine network between the mineral structures.

[Health indexes and "sanimetry": conceptual aspects of recent research on the measurement of a population's state of health (author's transl)].

The major health indexes based on the classical concepts of mortality and morbidity are reviewed while emphasizing their limitations: underestimation of health problems socio-economic impact, inadequacy for the evaluation of certain main objectives of health care delivery systems, purely negative measurement of health. This paper investigates the recent attempts to improve these aspects: extension of the concept of morbidity by the introduction of disability measurements and the development of a "positive health" concept. Finally, a discussion is presented of the major health indexes whose development is based on the use of these concepts and the main conceptual, methodological problems they give rise to.

Adenosarcoma of uterus and ovary: a clinicopathologic study of two cases.

We report the clinical and pathologic features of two cases of adenosarcoma. Our first case occurred in the ovary of a 51-year-old woman with extensive pelvic involvement. She was treated vigorously with radiation and chemotherapy and at the present time almost 9 years later the patient is free of disease. This represents a case with one of the longest survival reported in the literature. Our second case occurred in a 37-year-old woman and was limited to the endometrium.

Renal tubular sites of altered calcium transport in phosphate-depleted rats.

Increased calcium (Ca) excretion is characteristic of chronic phosphate (PO(4)) depletion (PD). To study the changes in tubular transport and the site of the hypocalciuric effect of PO(4) administration, clearance and micropuncture experiments were performed in intact rats pair fed either a control diet (0.5% PO(4)) or a PO(4)-depleted (PD) diet (0.01% PO(4)) plus Al(OH(3)) and in parathyroidectomized (PTX) PD rats, infused either with saline or with neutral sodium PO(4). Intact PD rats, compared with intact rats on a control diet, exhibited a lower plasma ultrafiltrable (UF) PO(4) (5.8+/-0.5 vs. 7.8+/-0.3 mg/dl), higher fractional excretion (FE) of Ca (4.1+/-1.2 vs. 0.6+/-0.1%), and reduced FE PO(4) (0.1+/-0.01 vs. 10.2+/-1.8%). Tubular fluid/plasma inulin was lower in the late proximal tubule of PD rats, associated with increases in fractional delivery (FD) from the proximal tubule of Na and Ca.The%FD of Ca to the early distal tubule of PD rats was increased (20+/-3 vs. 11+/-2%), but this difference was abolished by the late distal tubule (5.1+/-1.2 vs. 3.3+/-0.9%). In PTX-PD rats, PO(4) infusion increased plasma UF PO(4) (13.8+/-0.7 vs. 7.8+/-0.7 mg/dl). FE of Ca was reduced (1.08+/-0.35 vs. 4.59+/-1.57%) without correcting the increased Ca delivery to the late distal tubule. These data indicate that PD impairs Ca reabsorption in tubular segments before but not within the distal convoluted tubule, so that hypercalciuria is ultimately a result of decreased Ca transport either in the terminal nephron or in deeper nephrons where PO(4) infusion stimulates Ca transport independent of parathyroid hormone or changes in the filtered load of Ca.

Ultrastructural study of the protein-polysaccharides distribution in enamel from rat incisors.

The distribution pattern of the protein-polysaccharides in the rat incisor enamel was similar whether stained for glycoproteins (phosphotungstic acid) or for proteoglycans (alcian blue, bismith nitrate). Except for the holes at the dentino-enamel junction, where these components seem to exist as amorphous gel, protein-polysaccharides are closely associated to the proteinic fibrous matrix in rods and interrods structures as in prism sheaths where they are particularly abundant.

[Late development of human dental enamel].

Planes of longitudinal fractures of human dental enamel observed in scanning electron microscopy showed morphological variations related to age. This late maturation was observed along the enamel sheaths which disappeared in the subsurface and decreased in the rest of the structure. The destructions produced by demineralizing substances (phosphoric acid, citric acid, EDTA) were always more severe in enamel of older teeth when compared to younger samples. A pretreatment of the fragments with a urea solution increased the acid effects only in young enamel. It is suggested that the late maturation of enamel consists in a reduction of matrix components.

[Autoradiographic study of the activity of odontoblasts and secretory ameloblasts in the rat incisor: changes induced by vinblastine].

An autoradiographic study conducted on the rat incisor showed the presence 4 hours after (3H) proline injection, of 25-30% of the grains on the secreting cells and 70 to 75% on the extracellular matrics. The simultaneous injection of vinblastine sulphate reversed these percentages to 75-80% on the cellular level and 25-25% on the matrics. The vinblastine therefore inhibited the secretory processes of these cell types. On the other hand, due to the alkaloid, the number of grains present increased over the ameloblasts and principally over the intercellular spaces. The effects of these secretion and permeability variations suggested that a flow of precursor rich material reached the epithelial layer whatever the state of ameloblast activity.

Adenocarcinoma of the trachea: palliative response to cobalt-60 irradiation.

The prognosis of mucus-secreting adenocarcinoma of the trachea is grim. Its large size and infiltrative nature prohibit surgical resection and the response to radiation therapy has been poor. The authors report a case in which notable initial palliation was achieved through cobalt-60 therapy resulting in regression of the patient's tumour and a longer survival than that previously reported in patients with this disease.

Sodium exchange between two sites. The binding of sodium to halotolerant bacteria.

The longitudinal and transverse relaxation curves of sodium undergoing exchange between two sites are presented. When the two sites are 'bound' and 'free' sodium respectively, the relaxation curves are, in general, not exponential. It is shown that in some cases only one exponential decay could be detected experimentally though the true decay curve is much more complicated. In such cases where the population of 'free' and 'bound' sodium are equal, only 40-70% of the total intensity would be detected, depending on the lifetime of sodium in the two sites. It is also shown that the fast exchange approximation, usually applied in the interpretation of sodium relaxation curves, might lead to wrong conclusions. Measurements of sodium relaxation times in halotolerant bacteria show that T1 and T2 are different and frequency-dependent. The intensity of the sodium sugnal is 40% of the total sodium concentration. It was possible to simulate the relaxation behaviour and intensity measurements by applying the following model. There are three types of sodium, the extracellular sodium (A) which exchanges with part of the intracellular sodium (B) and a fraction (C) which is bound but does not exchange with the extracellular sodium. It was possible to estimate the physical properties of sodium at site B. The quadrupole coupling constant (e2qQ/H)B = 9.10(6) rad/s, the correlation time taucB = 5.5.10(-7) s and the lifetime of sodium at site B, tauB = 6.10(-4) s.
