[Studies on the mutagenicity test methods: comparison of the screening methods using Salmonella typhimurium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae].

Twenty-two acridine compounds and eleven phenanthridinium derivatives were tested for the induction of mutation in both eukaryotic, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and bacterial, Salmonella typhimurium. Summarized and discussed about the relationships between mutagenic activity and chemical structure of their compounds. Some metal compounds were examined for the induction of mitotic crossing over, mitotic gene conversion and reversion in yeast. Furthermore, the effects of the cell growth at the presence of these metal compounds on the mutations induced by nitrous acid was also examined. Mutagenic susceptibility of the yeast to these metal compounds on the comparison to the bacteria and the mechanisms of metal mutagenicity were discussed.

Evidence that factors other than 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D may play a role in augmenting intestinal calcium absorption in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

We examined 17 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism for their serum 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D levels and for their fractional intestinal calcium absorption rates using a whole body counter and calcium-47. As controls, 10 normal volunteers were examined both before and after administration of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D to increase serum 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D. Values of serum 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D were 71.6 +/- 37.6 pg/ml (mean +/- SD) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and 75.3 +/- 27.7 pg/ml (mean +/- SD) in normal volunteers after administration of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D, while values of intestinal calcium absorption rate were 61.5 +/- 16.5% (mean +/- SD) in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism and 34.1 +/- 5.1% (mean +/- SD) in normal controls, respectively. There was a positive correlation between values of serum 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D and intestinal calcium absorption in both groups. However, in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism, intestinal calcium absorption was more increased than that in normal volunteers when compared to their serum values of 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D. This suggests that another factor than 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D plays an important role in the intestinal calcium absorption in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

[Scintigraphy in breast cancer].

At present, scintigraphic studies of bone, liver and lymph node have widely been in assessment of metastasis due to breast cancer. Bone scintigraphy is sensitive in the detection of bone metastasis. However, it has also a demerit of high false positive rate. In order to exclude this possibility, bone marrow scintigraphy using 99mTc-Re-colloid is used. Bone marrow scintigraphy is able to differentiate bone metastasis from benign bone lesion and to clarify the intra-medullary metastasis. Liver scintigraphy associated with emission CT gives better detectability of SOL due to liver metastasis. Radionuclide lymphography is used for the visualization of parasternal lymph nodes, and for the evaluation of lymph nodes metastasis. Labelled estrogen as receptor imaging has been tried to delineate breast cancer itself or metastatic focus, but is remained to be further investigated.
