Localization of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and neurotensin immunoreactivities in the avian retina.

The distribution of vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)- and neurotensin (NT)-like immunoreactivities in the chicken retina was investigated by immunohistochemistry. VIP- and NT-positive cells were found throughout the chicken retina. The majority of them were located in the proximal portion of the inner nuclear layer and the processes from these cells directed to the inner plexiform layer where they ramified, suggesting that VIP- and NT-positive cells located in this region probably are amacrine cells.

The fine structure of the merozoites and gametocytes of Leucocytozoon caulleryi.

The fine structure of the merozoites and gametocytes of Leucocytozoon caulleryi from the peripheral blood of chickens was studied by means of electron microscopy. Merozoites are oval to elongate and are surrounded by a pellicle. They possess a large nucleus, numerous ribosomes, microtubules, a mitochondrion with tubular cristae, a cytostome, an apical complex consisting of three polar rings, electron-dense paired rhoptries, and micronemes. Mature gametocytes are irregular in shape and are surrounded by a three layered pellicle, and contain a large nucleus, mitochondria with tubular cristae, endoplasmic reticulum, numerous ribosomes, food vacuoles, cytostomes, and lipid inclusions. Macrogametocytes are easily distinguished from the microgametocytes by more ribosome concentration and the presence of well developed endoplasmatic reticulum.

Fast oscillatory EEG activity induced by analgesic concentrations of nitrous oxide in man.

EEGs during inhalation of analgesic concentrations of 30%, 50%, and 70% nitrous oxide in oxygen, in the absence of other medication were studied in man. Although nitrous oxide has been considered to produce no significant change in EEG activity, it was found to produce characteristic fast oscillatory activity (FOA) in a predictable fashion. FOA was associated with unconsciousness or unresponsiveness to stimuli and appeared predominantly in the frontal areas. Power spectrum analyses showed that the frequency of FOA was remarkably constant across subjects and across trials with a peak frequency of 34 Hz. Amplitude and quantity of FOA increased as the concentration of nitrous oxide increased approaching 100 microV and more than 90%, respectively, under 70% nitrous oxide. It took approximately 1 hour after cessation of nitrous oxide before EEGs had completely returned control pattern with little FOA in spite of expected rapid decrease of alveolar nitrous oxide concentration. FOA can serve as a clinical monitor of the effectiveness of nitrous oxide analgesia.

Tumor-promoting phorbol diester-induced specific changes in cell surface glycoprotein profile of K562 human leukemic cells.

The tumor-promoting phorbol ester, 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), induced specific changes in the cell surface glycoprotein profile of K562 human leukemic cells. TPA-treated K562 cells were examined by cell surface labeling followed by immunoprecipitation with anti-glycophorin antiserum or anti-K562 antiserum. TPA-treated K562 cells lost glycophorin and glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 105,000, which are specific to later stages of erythroid cell differentiation, and retained glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 95,000, which is specific to early stages of erythroid cell differentiation. On the other hand, 4 alpha-phorbol-12,13-didecanoate, which is inactive as a tumor promoter, induced no significant changes in cell surface glycoproteins of K562 cells. In parallel, TPA induced morphological changes of K562 cells as their growth was inhibited, whereas 4 alpha-phorbol-12,13-didecanoate had no effect on these two characteristics. Thus, the tumor promoter induced specific changes in the cell surface glycoprotein profile of K562 human leukemic cells, which appeared to be induced into a retrodifferentiated stage.
