[Chemotherapy of gastrointestinal cancer in elderly patients--evaluation of combination therapy with mitomycin C and 5-fluorouracil].

Sixty-three elderly patients with gastrointestinal cancer were treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) or tegafur alone, and a combination of mitomycin C (MMC) and 5-FU. Judged by Koyama-Saito's criteria, the combination treatment was superior to single drug therapy. The response was somewhat correlated with survival in the combination regimen although it produced more gastrointestinal and myelotoxicities than the single drug. Our results suggest that the combination of MMC and 5-FU is useful in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers in the elderly.

[Clinical significance of the bone marrow examination in small cell carcinoma of the lung].

To study the clinical relevance of bone-marrow metastasis, bone-marrow biopsy and aspiration from the posterior iliac crest were performed in 11 consecutive patients with small cell carcinoma of the lung. Six of the 11 patients (54.5%) showed tumor cell involvement in the bone marrow. In 4 patients with bone-marrow metastasis, myelocytes and metamyelocytes were present in the peripheral blood. Aspiration was diagnostically more valuable than bone-marrow biopsy. Bone scintigrams, using 99mTc-MDP, correlated with the bone-marrow involvement except in one case, where false-negative results were obtained. The areas of bone-marrow metastasis did not match well with the positive lesions detected by bone scintigraphy.

Influence of chronic renal failure on protein synthesis in rat liver and muscle.

Protein-synthetic activity in the liver and muscle of rats with chronic renal failure (CRF) of 2 weeks' duration was studied by examining RNA/DNA ratios and polysome profiles and in vitro protein synthetic activity of isolated polysomes. CRF was found to cause differential effects on protein synthesis in the liver and muscle. In the liver, CRF caused impairment of protein synthesis only in the fed condition; CRF rats maintained the same "basal" protein synthetic activity as the sham-operated control rats upon 18 hours' starvation. In the muscle, the effect of CRF was manifested only in the starved condition; CRF caused extensive disaggregation of polysomes when animals were starved. It is proposed that the muscle serves as a "reserve" protein when animals sustain a protein-catabolic state such as CRF.

Afferent and efferent connections of small nuclei in the posterolateral hypothalamus of the cat.

Four separate neuronal groups, termed the anterior, dorsal, ventral, and posterior nuclei of the juxtamamillary complex, were labeled retrogradely from the thalamic lateral posterior nucleus with horseradish peroxidase. The retrograde labeling was predominantly ipsilateral in the anterior, dorsal, and ventral nuclei, while it was predominantly contralateral in the posterior nucleus. The anterior, dorsal, and posterior nuclei could be detected clearly in Nissl sections; the ventral nucleus was only identified by horseradish peroxidase transport. The distribution of afferents to the juxtamamillary nuclei was investigated with the Fink-Heimer technique. Following lesions of the olfactory tubercle and underlying structures, degenerating fibers in the medial forebrain bundle terminated discretely in the juxtamamillary nuclei. The dense terminal pattern conformed to the borders of the nuclei and was sometimes visible macroscopically. This pattern resembles that of medial forebrain bundle afferents to nuclei gemini in the rabbit and rat. Since the anatomical portions of these nuclei are also similar, it was concluded that the nuclei of the cat are comparable with the nuclei gemini in the rabbit and rat.
