[Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum of cervical canal and in the pouch of Douglas in infertile women: a preliminary report].

Detection of Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma urealyticum in the samples obtained from the cervical canal of the uterus and from the pouch of Douglas in 71 women in whom underwent diagnostic and operative laparoscopy is presented. Ureaplasma urealyticum in 33 cases diagnosed for infertility was present in 6 (18.2%) patients. In cervical canal and the pouch of Douglas in 5 and 2 women respectively. In 1 (3.0%) woman Ureaplasma urealyticum was present in both places. In the women from the control group U. urealyticum was detected in 6 (15.5%) cases only in cervical canal. Mycoplasma hominis was present only in cervical canal more frequently in the control group 4 (cases) than among infertile women 1 (3.0%).

Susceptibility of the malaria vectors to insecticides in Bangladesh.

Insecticide susceptibility tests with diagnostic dosages of 4% DDT and 5% malathion concentrations conducted at field sites on the two important principal malaria vectors namely, Anopheles dirus and An. philippinensis have been reported. They are found to be susceptible to DDT and malathion. The implication of the use of insecticides in controlling malaria is also discussed.

Characterization of linamarase of latex and its localization in petioles in cassava.

The distribution of linamarase in latex and its purification, characterization, and immunocytochemical localization in petioles were studied in order to get an insight into the process of cyanogenesis in cassava. Crude latex exudate exhibited low linamarase activity, but on dilution the activity increased about fivefold. Assay using petiole latex collected in isotonic medium showed that the enzyme was distributed in vesicle-like structures. In vitro studies showed that about 50% activity was released from the vesicle into the medium within an hour. Latex linamarase was purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation and DEAE-cellulose chromatography and was characterized with respect to its amino acid composition and kinetic properties. Gel filtration and SDS-PAGE analysis showed that the enzyme was made up of a 70,000-Da peptide. Immunocytochemical studies on the localization of linamarase in cassava petioles showed sporadic positive staining in the phloem and intense staining in the thickened corners of the collenchyma cells of the cortex, suggesting the distribution of linamarase in laticifers as well as in the cell wall.

Patterns of adolescent involvement in problem behaviors: relationship to self-efficacy, social competence, and life events.

Using a sample of 556 adolescents from a suburban community, patterns of various adolescent problem behaviors (e.g., delinquent behavior, smoking, use of alcohol or drugs) and their links to self-efficacy, social competence, and life events were examined. Cluster analysis was conducted to identify four subgroups of adolescents who showed distinct patterns of problem behaviors. These clusters were compared on the measures of self-efficacy, social competence, and life events. Overall results suggest there are meaningful links between adolescents' problem behavior patterns and self-efficacy, the amount and quality of participation in various after school activities, and life events. For example, a subgroup of adolescents who showed uniformly low prevalence of all problem behaviors reported more positive academic self-efficacy, more active participation in sports and nonsports activities, more positive life events, and fewer negative events than adolescents who were involved in multiple problem behaviors. Implications for prevention and future research on adolescent problem behaviors are discussed.

A survey of larval and adult mosquitoes on the flood plains of Bangladesh, in relation to flood-control activities.

A mosquito survey was carried out between October 1991 and November 1992 on the flood plains of Bangladesh, as part of a baseline study designed to help predict the effects on vector-borne diseases of embanking rivers under the Bangladesh Government's Flood Action Plan. Overall, 15 species of larval and 15 species of adult anophelines were collected, along with 13 larval and 21 adult culicines. Anophelines made up only 6% of the mosquitoes caught at human bait. The most abundant anopheline biting man was Anopheles vagus, the dominant species in all nine sampling villages. The other recognized malaria vectors in the flood plains of Bangladesh, namely An. philippinensis, An. aconitus and An. annularis, were collected but in relatively low numbers. Culex vishnui was the most abundant biting culicine in all villages. Biting mosquitoes showed a bimodal seasonality of biting, with peaks between February and April and September and October. All biting mosquitoes showed a significant preference for outdoor biting. The densities of the mosquito populations are more likely to be affected by the large-scale environmental changes which have occurred in Bangladesh, as well as the dramatic increase in the density of the human population, than by the river embankments per se.

Larval habitat of Anopheles philippinensis: a vector of malaria in Bangladesh.

This article reviews the various types of larval habitat of the malaria vector Anopheles philippinensis Ludlow in Bangladesh and characterizes its breeding ecology. Discussed also are the possible implications of the environmental changes on its breeding habitats resulting from intensified land use brought about by population increase and developments in irrigation and water resources.

[Extensive postpartum, bilateral ovarian vein thrombosis].

A 29-year-old woman with extensive pelvic thrombophelebitis complicating postpartum, ovarian vein thrombosis is described. The phlebitic process involved both ovaries, extending upwards to the inferior vena cava above the level of the renal veins and downwards to the ileo-femoral system, obstructing the venous drainage of the lower limbs. Extensive postpartum thrombophlebitis is now rarely encountered, since its early clinical diagnosis using CT and US techniques allows early treatment, obviates this complication. Postpartum bedside alertness, aided by modern imaging techniques, may prevent serious, life-threatening complications.

[Chlamydia trachomatis and concomitant flora in the internal genital organs of women without clinical symptoms of infection].

One thousand and forty swabs from 52 gynaecological patients were examined bacteriologically. The most frequently isolated pathogen was C. trachomatis found in the endocervix in 19.2%, in the endometrium in 17.3% and in the fallopian tube in 48.1% of the examined women. There was also shown that presence of C. trachomatis in utero and in fallopian tube not always coexist with it's presence in the endocervix, move over presence of that microbe doesn't have influence on presence of any bacteria in genitourinary tract.

[Chlamydia trachomatis during genital tract infection and in imminent abortion].

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ch.t.) is suspected to be a dominant factor in the etiology of genito-urinary tract infectious diseases. The aim of the authors work was the evaluation of the Ch. t. presence in the cervix of women with adnexitis or with the imminent abortion. 300 women were investigated for the Ch.t. detection. The smear taken from the cervical canal was evaluated with 3 methods: direct immunofluorescence assay. Chlamydiazine test and culture. Ch.t. infection was detected in 27% of examined patients. The positive results was observed the more frequently in the patients showing the clinical symptoms of infection (42%) and in the pregnant women with imminent abortion symptoms (26%). The obtained results seem to confirm the pathogenic role of Ch.t. in the genital tract infectious diseases. Authors are postulating them the necessity of the prophylactic Ch.t. detection in the pregnant women.

Biological control of mosquito larvae by Guppy fish.

Predation potentiality of a biological control agent, the guppy fish, Poecilia reticulata (= Lebistes reticulatus), was studied over the mosquito larvae under laboratory conditions. The third instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito were used as prey. The average consumption rate was 41.0 per day per fish. The female fish was more active (54.9) than male ones (27.0). The feeding activity was found to be higher at higher water temperature. The study suggests that this fish could be used, after careful field trial, as a promising and sustainable biological control agent in controlling filariasis and other mosquito-borne diseases.
