[Functional scintigraphy in the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux (author's transl)].

The accepted diagnostical procedures to prove a gastroesophageal reflux by direct or indirect methods do not allow any quantification and are of limited sensitivity. A quantification is possible by use of a gamma-camera with a computer-system after application of a small amount of 99m Tc-DPTA (reflux scintiscan). The high accuracy of this method could be proven by evaluation of 51 patients with suspected gastroesophageal reflux esophagitis or after total gastrectomy. The results were compared with the histological findings. With this method we found after total gastrectomy the expected high incidence of relux. The long-term results after semifundoplication were not as good as after fundoplication. The reflux scintiscan is a less invasive, but reliable method to detect the gastroesophageal reflux.

Hemangiosarcoma and hepatocellular carcinoma of the liver following vinyl chloride exposure. A report of two cases.

A report is given of the clinical and autopsy findings of two men who died from malignant liver neoplasm following occupational exposure to vinyl chloride. The first patient was a 44-year-old man with an hemangiosarcoma of the liver, the second patient a 67-year-old man with an hepatocellular carcinoma. So far an hepatocellular carcinoma due to vinyl chloride has not yet been observed in man. Its occurrence, however, has been suggested from the results of animal experiments. The connection of hepatocellular carcinoma with exposure to vinyl chloride is discussed.

Liver cirrhosis: immunofluorescence and biochemical studies demonstrate two types of collagen.

Pepsin solubilization of small and large noduled liver cirrhosis yielded two types of collagen (precipitated at 1.7 and 2.5 M NaCl concentrations) as demonstrated by electronmicroscopy. The 1.7 M NaCl precipitate was identified as type III collagen using an immunofluorescence technique. The 2.5 M NaCl precipitate appeared to be type I in the electronmicroscope. However, immunofluorescent and biochemical studies indicated that it was not type I but a type of collagen not yet described.

Autotransfusion of 3H-cytidine-labelled blood lymphocytes in patients with Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin patients. II. Exchangeable lymphocyte pools.

The dilution in the circulating blood of lymphocytes lablled in vitro with 3H-cytidine was examined after autotransfusion in 9 patients with Hodgkin's disease (HD) stage II A-IV B, 5 of whom were untreated; in 2 untreated patients with carcinoma, and in 1 treated patient with scleroderma. The blood transit time of exchangeable lymphocytes was 37 +/- 18 min in the patients with HD and 26 +/- 6 min in the other patients. The proportion of exchangeable (recirculating) small blood lymphocytes was 39-84% in HD and 81-91% in the carcinoma patients. The relation between the size of the circulating pool of small blood lymphocytes and the total exchangeable (recirculating) lymphocyte pool was 1:20 to 1:30 in HD and 1:29 to 1:34 in the other patients. The absolute size of the recirculating pool of lymphocytes was 46-90 times 10(9) cells in HD and 100-150 times 10(9) cells in the carcinoma patients.
