Two structurally similar peptides were isolated from a preparation of GIP using an HPLC system. The major peptide corresponds to GIP1-42 and the minor has the sequence GIP3-42. GIP1-42 has both insulinotropic and somatostatinotropic activities, whereas GIP3-42 has only insignificant activity. GIP was also shown to potentiate insulin release initiated by D-glyceraldehyde, L-leucine/L-glutamine and 2-keto-isocaproic acid. No potentiation was observed with 2-ketocaproate. The 4 substrates studied are all metabolized but via different mechanisms.
Ectopia cordis is a rare congenital anomaly with an unknown incidence. The heart lies totally or partially outside the thoracic cage. Sternal cleft without cardiac protrusion outside the thorax is not included. The condition is often associated with various cardiac and extracardiac anomalies. During the period 1968-1978 three cases of thoracic total ectopia cordis were encountered. Surgical correction was unsuccessful. This has been the outcome in all but one case of thoracic forms of total ectopia cordis reported earlier in the literature.
Propionibacterium acnes is the bacterial species most consistently isolated from acne lesions. Intradermal injection of a heat-killed suspension of P. acnes induced a delayed erythematous and often popular inflammatory reaction which was maximal after 24-48 h. This response was dose related and was probably mediated at least partly by immune mechanisms. In eighty-one subjects with acne of varying severity of the acne. These findings indicate that the host response to P. acnes is an important variable in determining the severity of inflammatory acne.
