Cellular heterogeneity in primary monolayer cultures of mouse pituitary thyrotropic tumors: separation of thyrotrophs.

Primary monolayer cultures of cells derived by enzymatic dispersion from mouse pituitary thyrotropic tumors were demonstrated to be comprised of at least 2 cell types and were separated by selective culture techniques. Suspension cultures of spherical cells had the morphological characteristics of thyrotrophs and produced large quantities of TSH. Separated monolayer cultures of spreading, planar cells produced collagen but almost no TSH. These observations indicate that primary monolayer cultures of cells derived from thyrotropic tumors are heterogeneous, containing only a small proportion of thyrotrophs.

REM sleep time and digit span impairment in alcoholics.

In a group of 20 abstinent alcoholics, the amount of REM sleep was correlated with the degree of Digit Span scatter from the modified verbal mean of the WAIS. The Digits Backward component was more strongly related to REM time than was the Digits Forward component, suggesting an association between reduced REM sleep time and short-term memory impairment.

The micromorphology of the glands of the infra-orbital cutaneous sinus of the steenbok (Raphicerus campestris).

The infra-orbital cutaneous sinus produces a black secretion which is the combined secretion of melanaceous, branched, alveolar, sebaceous and enlarged, coiled apocrine glands. The micromorphology of these glands is described with special emphasis on the sebaceous glands and melanin transfer. The secretion, which may be used for unintentional territorial demarcation, is possibly produced as small black granules and is most likely important for short range communication.

The micromorphology of the apocrine glands of the intermandibular region of the steenbok (Raphicerus campestris).

The histological structure of the newly-discovered intermandibular glandular region in male and female steenbok is described. This region consists of enlarged sebaceous and apocrine glands which secrete a substance used for demarcating grazing territories and for marking females. Migratory lymphoid cells in the epithelium of the apocrine glands resemble Langerhans cells of the epidermis and forestomach epithelium but do not contain Langerhans cell granules. Cells, which are probably of lymphoid origin and resemble sebaceous gland cells, sometimes occur in the apocrine glands.

The importance of accurate gestational age estimation in screening for fetal neural tube defects using maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein levels.

Estimates of gestational age based on menstrual history are often in error, often by as much as 4 weeks. The effect of this problem with respect to a screening program for neural tube defects based on maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein determination is examined. The variance of alpha-fetoprotein values for serum samples assigned to gestational age categories from 15 to 19 weeks of gestation based on menstrual history and that of samples classified according to sonographic estimates do not show clear-cut differences. However, when an individual sample is referred to a calibration curve of normal values, errors in gestational age estimates significantly increase the possibility of a false positive/false negative decision for high-level percentile classification. The effect of such an error is least at 16 to 17 weeks of gestation.

Ability to remain abstinent after methadone detoxification. A six-year study.

Three hundred thirty-five persons successfully detoxified from methadone hydrochloride maintenance were followed up for as long as six years to determine their ability to remain abstinent from narcotic use. At the end of the observation period, of the 269 persons located, 35% were narcotic-free, 58% had returned to narcotic use, and 8% were either jailed or deceased. The ability of a person to refrain from narcotic use was found to be highly associated with staff's assessment of progress and duration of methadone maintenance treatment. Relapse to narcotic use occurred regardless of length of abstinence, with 35% of relapses occurring after three or more years. While abstinence after narcotic dependency is possible, it is not a realistic goal for all. Premature detoxification from methadone maintenance is associated with a high recidivism rate to narcotics.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis in infants.

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), a serious complication of asthma, is thought to rarely afflict infants. We report three children less than 2 years of age in whom this disorder developed. The major criteria for the diagnosis include: (1) asthma, (2) recurrent pulmonary infiltrations with peripheral eosinophilia, (3) positive aspergillus skin tests at 15 minutes and at 4 to 6 hours, (4) serum precipitating antibodies to aspergillus, and (5) elevated serum IgE levels. Early diagnosis and treatment of ABPA in infants may prevent the ravages of the disease and help to sharpen our concepts of the course and immunopathogenesis.

Interpersonal skill practive as a component in effective parent training.

This study emphasized the importance of including parental practice of skills in an effective, interpersonal-skill parent-training program. In particular, it is stressed as being most effective to include parental practice with the child as a component within the actual training session. Using a training approach developed by R.R. Carkhuff and emphasizing this parent-child practice component, parents were trained in interpersonal skills. At the conclusion of 15 hours of training, the parents were significantly better able to attend to and respond to their children than before the training. Additionally, the parents saw themselves as much improved in these areas.
