[Measurement of blood flow velocity in the cerebral vessels of neonates: a method for continual doppler ultrasound detection].

The authors refer in their paper to previous discussions on methodological problems associated with the application of Doppler continuous ultrasonography in neonatological practice. The methodological investigation was made in a group of twelve neonates with a mean birth weight of 2028 g and gestational age of 33.3 weeks. All were examined at the age of three weeks when the postpartum adaptation is already completed and the clinical condition is stabilized. After perfect mastering of the technique of measurement, the authors found that the mean error of assessment of PI on the internal carotid artery was 3.6%, on its siphon 2.7% and on the anterior cerebral artery 2.7%. The mean error of measurement for MVF on the same arteries was 7.7%, 13.7% and 6.1% resp. The greatest error was for EDFV on the internal carotid artery 11.7% on its siphon 15.8% and on the anterior cerebral artery 6.1%. The smallest mean error of assessment of all three parameters was on the anterior cerebral artery, the greatest error on the siphon of the internal carotid artery. On the investigated arteries no significant lateral difference was recorded. The mean values of PI, MFV and EDFV have a declining trend in the direction towards the periphery, i.e. in the direction from the internal carotid artery to the anterior cerebral artery. These trends were also confirmed in individual children. The authors assume that the method of continuous Doppler ultrasonography is despite limitations, inherent to its nature, suited for use in neonatological practice.

[Use of genealogical patterns to record family relationships].

The authors draw attention to the possibility to use classical genealogical patterns for recording basic characteristics of families during psychological and psychiatric examinations. In the pattern the birth order, age and sex of siblings, relationship in the dyad or between family members, dominance and submissiveness, extramarital relations etc. can be indicated. The pattern ensures easy orientation, makes the work faster and the data can be used for research purposes.

[A pre-pregnancy preventive regimen (pre-pregnancy preparation) for cleft lip and palate].

In families with the risk of cleft lip and palate at the Clinic of Plastic Surgery in Prague a preconception and prenatal protective regime (planned conception) is ensured. The protective regime comprises a recommended time of conception, elimination of possible medical causes of the defect, investigation of infections of group TROCH, optimalization of the living and working environment. Gynaecological care is focused on the hormonal status of the women, gynaecological inflammations and hypoplasia of the uterus. Two months before conception a diet rich in protein, vitamins and minerals, trace elements and folic acid is recommended. The authors discuss possible risks of this method, problems of evaluation of the results and possibilities of testing its effectiveness.

[Fertility and reproductive risks in older women in Czechoslovakia].

From nation-wide and health statistics data on the reproduction of women above 35 years of age in the CSR were obtained for the years 1975, 1980 and 1985. The older women accounted for 3.8% of all parturient women in 1985 and their relative ratio rose in the course of ten years by 1%, but only due to the group of 35-39 years-old. The specific fertility of older women declined by 40% mainly due to induced abortions. The abortion indices in 1985 reached in the 35-39 year-old ones 2990 and in the 40-44-year-old ones 7523. The number of neonates delivered by older women did not decline so far due to the present large number of women in this age group. The authors compared the reproductive risks of older age groups with the most fertile group of 20-24 year-old ones in the period of 1984 and 1985. Pregnancy ends by spontaneous miscarriage in the group of 35-39 year-old ones 3.2X more frequently and in the group of 40-44 year old ones 6.6X more frequently. The authors assessed the specific risks of spontaneous abortion with regard to the length of pregnancy. Older women have more frequently surgical deliveries (2.4X) incl. three times more frequent Caesarean sections. Deliveries by the breech position are more frequent (1.4X) and also deliveries of low birth weight infants (1.9X). The perinatal mortality, in particular its antenatal component are 2.5X and 3.5X resp. higher. Infants of older mothers are more frequently discharged with an uncertain prognosis (1.8X) or are damaged (2X).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Separation of alpha-amino acid enantiomers by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography after derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde and a sodium salt of 1-thio-beta-D-glucose.

A sensitive system for D,L-amino acid analysis has been developed, using fluorescence derivatization with o-phthaldialdehyde in the presence of sodium salt of 1-thio-beta-D-glucose. The reagents rapidly form fluorescent diastereoisomeric derivatives with primary amino acids. These derivatives are efficiently separated on a conventional reversed-phase column with an analysis time of 60 min. Simultaneous determination of enantiomers of various amino acids was achieved by a simple binary gradient elution with methanol in 0.05 M aqueous sodium acetate.

[Incidence of the 1/29 Robertsonian translocation in the cattle population in Czechoslovakia].

We studied the inheritance of a serious chromosomal aberration--Robertsonian translocation 1/29 (R.t.1/29) in the female and male progeny of three successive generations after five heterozygous sires, carriers of this chromosomal aberration. Of the total number of 43 progenies that were examined cytogenetically, we found in ten sons of the second successive generation R.t.1/29 in 50% and in 26 daughters in 53%. In the third successive generation we found out this chromosomal aberration in one of two bullocks and in none of five heifers. In all cases we recorded the diploid chromosome number 59,XYt or 59,XXt in heterozygous constitution, in 100% of all examined mitoses. The translocation is of a monocentric type. The results including the data on the fertility of sires do not, however, demonstrate explicitly the reduced fertility of sires with this aberration, or of their progeny, as mentioned by some researchers.

[Asymmetry of the digits in pigs as a hereditarily conditioned variation in the anatomic structure of the extremities].

As follows from the population statistical investigation performed within the management information system, defects of the anatomic structure of the feet occur in the pig population of all breeds and cross combinations kept in the Czech Socialist Republic: the frequency of this occurrence is relatively higher than 4.4% (1984) and 3.8% (1985) of all litters affected by some of the genetic defects. In some populations different degrees of claw asymmetry occur in more than 40% of the individuals. Environmental conditions contribute to the severity of the defect (technology, particularly the type of floor), but the disposition is genetically conditioned. Prevention should mainly be based on the negative selection of the carriers of the undesired disposition. Working on this study, we used the results of the population statistical processing of the reports on the hereditary defects of pigs and the results of our own observations. In the former case the data concerned 29,778 pig litters, in the latter case 7343 pigs of the Large White, Landrace, Duroc and Prestice Black-Pied breeds.
