Selected households in three northern Mississippi counties were surveyed to assess their primary medical care needs. Consumers' expectations concerning pharmaceutical services were analyzed. The results indicate that the surveyed population expects comprehensive pharmaceutical services. Patient profiles were the most desired service. Consumers were least interested in pharmacist counseling on health matters unrelated to drugs. Most services, however, are sought and/or delivered less frequently than expected. Pharmacists need to make consumers aware of available services.

Pure preparations of rabbit properdin were obtained from rabbit serum by ion-exchange chromatography. These preparations functioned as properdin when they were measured with the zymosan assay or with a serum reagent selectively depleted of properdin by a specific immunoabsorbent. Properdin in these preparations was in its activated state. A new serum factor was required to measure properdin activity when purified preparations of rabbit properdin were tested with the zymosan assay. This factor was designated as ZBP, or zymosan-binding protein. ZBP appeared to be distinct from known components of the alternative complement pathway and the classical complement system, and it did not appear to be an immunoglobulin.
Of six goats with polioencephalomalacia, three responded to thiamin therapy, whereas three died 2 to 7 days after onset of signs. The goats were 2 months to 2 1/2 years old. They were affected during the winter or early spring, and concentrate feeding was a prominent part of the history. Transketolase activity values were obtained from two affected goats and from nine controls. The affected goats had lower transketolase activity than any of the controls.

In a variety of situations it has been observed that the processing of a verbal stimulus is facilitated when it is preceded by an associated word. This article is concerned with determining whether such facilitation occurs automatically upon prime presentation or whether facilitation depends on the manner of processing the prime. Experiment 1 demonstrated that a letter search in a target word was facilitated when the target was preceded by either an identical or semantically associated word. If, however, a letter search was required in the prime as well as in the target (Experiment 2), the relative advantage enjoyed by targets preceded by identical-word primes disappeared. Experiment 3 replicated this loss of facilitation using semantically associated word pairs. Contextual facilitation thus appears to depend upon the mode of analysis of the prime. If the prime is analyzed as a meaningful unit, facilitation occurs. If, however, it is subjected to a more discrete, letter-by-letter analysis, the priming effect vanishes.

Two hundred forty previously healthy military personnel with nonstreptococcal upper respiratory infections were prospectively studied to define the incidence and clinicopathologic characteristics of possible virus-associated glomerulonephritis. Nine patients without preceding streptococcal infection had erythrocyte casts on urinalysis and glomerulonephritis on biopsy. Of these nine, four had a reduction in total hemolytic complement and five had serologic evidence of infection with adenovirus, influenza A, or influenza B. Initial renal biopsy showed either focal or diffuse mesangial proliferation in all nine, with mesangial C3 deposits in six specimens. Repeat biopsy in three showed histologic improvement or loss of immunofluorescent staining, or both. Sequential creatinine clearances were reduced to 74 to 90 mL/min.1.73 m2 in five patients for the duration of follow-up. We conclude that nonstreptococcal upper respiratory infection is frequently associated with glomerulonephritis and that abnormal glomerular structure and decreased creatinine clearances may persist for at least 2 to 8 months.

A survey of hospital administrators showed some expected correlations and some surprising contradictions between their opinions of the unit dose system and their institutions' policies on use of the system. The survey indicated that hospital administrators need to be better informed about many of the advantages and disadvantages of the unit dose system and that communication with the hospital pharmacists strongly influences their opinions.
One fatal and 1 nonfatal case of Japanese pieris (Pieris japonica) poisoning in goats prompted experimental feeding of the plant at 0.1% of a healthy goat's body weight. Clinical signs observed included colic and nausea. The principal necropsy finding was inhalation pneumonia.
