In rats, gastric mucus was decreased by starvation. The administration of carbenoxolone sodium, prednisolone, or their combination to starved rats brought the level of gastric mucus to that of nonstarved controls. Concomitant treatment with carbenoxolone sodium did not prevent prednisolone-induced ulceration of the glandular stomach in starved rats. The ulcerations of the prostomach (squamous spithelium)induced by starvation were prevented by carbenoxolone sodium, prednisolone, or the combination of the two.
A case of lymphosarcoma of the heart in a 10-year-old boy is presented. The clinical picture simulated a pericarditis. Prednisolone had a remarkably good temporary effect. Post-mortem examination showed a highly differentiated lymphosarcoma invading the pericardium and myocardium from a primary mediastinal localisation. Cytologic examination for malignant cells in the pericardial fluid must not be forgotten in a case of unexplained pericardial effusion.

Previous work on a factor in the blood of patients with peptic ulcer which contracts smooth muscle was confirmed and the work extended to investigation of the activity of blood fractions. Whole heparinized blood and its fractions were tested on a strip of guinea pig ileum and height of contraction and latent period were used as criteria of activity. Whole heparinized blood of ulcer patients had significantly higher activity than that of normal controls. Differences between the fractions of ulcer patients and controls were less significant. With the lysed buffy coat, however, while the differences between the height of contraction between the groups did not differ statistically, the speed of the reaction (shorter latent period) was significantly greater in the ulcer patients. The cellular alterations causing this response are unknown.

In a series of patients admitted to hospital for bleeding duodenal ulcer, the mean age at onset for patients belonging to blood group O was significantly lower than for those of blood group A. This raises the question of the significance of age and ABO blood group substances in increasing the liability to, or protecting against, bleeding.

Two enzymes, phosphoglycerate mutase and peroxidase, were purified by using an immobilized metal ion adsorbent for the removal of unwanted proteins. The mutase was obtained pure from a single column, whereas the purification of peroxidase required the use of a thiophilic adsorbent in a tandem. The capacity was 2.5 mg pure peroxidase per mL gel.
We have previously shown that somatostatin (SS) immunoreactive (-i) neurons, located in the rat dentate hilus, are vulnerable to cerebral ischemia (Johansen et al., 1987). Within 40 h after ischemia, the cells show clear signs of cell death. At the same time, we observed that dying cells, located in the projection field of the mossy fibers (dentate hilus and CA3 mossy fiber layer), accumulate free zinc. We now demonstrate that the hilar cells, accumulating zinc after ischemia, are SS-i cells. Since it is known that hypothermia can ameliorate ischemic brain damage, we furthermore studied whether hypothermia (29 degrees C) protects the vulnerable SS-i neurons in hilus from zinc accumulation and ischemic cell death. We found that hypothermia both prevented ischemia-induced neuronal zinc accumulation and cell death. We speculate that hilar SS-i cells are highly vulnerable to ischemia, and develop rapid ischemic cell death, because they accumulate zinc shortly after ischemia.
This paper argues that we should understand the process of IT design as the development of sociotechnical configurations. Drawing upon our experiences with an electronic patient record (EPR) on an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), we depict medical work practices as natural systems. Several considerations for design are developed. First, the EPR should not be overly structured with rationalistic and prefixed notions of the organization and content of medical work. Implementing structure is crucial, however, this should be derived from detailed, empirical knowledge of the practice involved. Second, it is crucial to ensure that the usage of the system will yield immediate benefits for primary users: the systems should support work, not generate it. Third, designing IT should include being aware of the socio political nature of seemingly 'neutral' tools as EPRs.
beta-Secretase is one of the prime targets for therapeutic intervention of Alzheimer's disease. For the development of a secretase inhibitor a steady supply of large quantities of a homogeneous and active recombinant beta-secretase is a prerequisite. Therefore various culture modes were investigated using HEK-293 cells stably transfected with soluble recombinant beta-secretase. The coupling of the Fc part of human IgG1 to the ectodomain of beta-secretase (residues 1-460) allowed a fast purification of the protein with rProtA expanded bed chromatography. Batch cultures of 5 to 50 L working volume run for 7 days showed reproducible cell growth and product yields of 3 mg/L purified protein. A 20 L perfusion culture was operated for 21 days, reaching a cell density of 30 x 10(6) cells/mL at a dilution rate of 2/d. The total product yield of the perfusion culture was 1.4 g of purified protein. The effect of different perfusion rates on cell growth, protein yield, and quality was investigated and compared to the results obtained in batch cultures. Protein quality was consistent as analyzed on 1D SDS-PAGE, and the final product contained both the mature and the pro form of beta-secretase. Although the cell specific protein expression was slightly reduced in perfusion culture, a substantial increase in specific activity of over 75% was achieved. Some of the increase in activity can be explained by an increase in the percentage of the mature form of the recombinant protein.
A comprehensive questionnaire that assessed both physical and psychosocial work environments, as well as personal health and lifestyle, was answered by 133 (92%) employees. In addition, we assessed the physical/chemical and psychosocial environments of 8 randomly selected employees, of whom some had environmentally related health complaints. Environmental factors most often associated with poor work environments were improper room temperature, light reflexes (i.e., glare and reflection of light), dust, and dry air. Emission products from traffic pollution and 1,1,1-trichloroethane levels were also detected. The electromagnetic fields in both the low and the extremely low frequencies spectra were close to background levels. Individuals who had environmentally associated health symptoms worked mainly in the customer support division, and they perceived higher work demands. Their computer environment was also worse ergonomically. There were no differences with respect to objective skin signs or disease between those with and without symptoms, respectively. The results of this study point to the importance of looking at both the psychosocial and physical environments when health complaints arise in modern offices.
