A new formulation of the uncertainty relation of position and momentum, and of energy and time, is presented. The connection between the lifetime of excited states and the energy width of these states, which does not follow from the usual uncertainty relation, is shown to be a consequence of the expression here derived.
This is a simple test for the early recognition of a clinically 'latent' facial motor lesion, which detects the difference in fatigability between the two sides of the peri-oral musculature. Fatigue is produced by the patient's effort to maintain maximal contraction against lateral traction of the angles of the mouth by two weighted hooks. Fatigue is expressed as the distance between the midline of the philtrum and a mark on each hook. Distance plotted against time gives a 'facial fatigue curve'. In the authors ' experience the test has revealed pathological fatigability in 8 cases, 2 intrameatal and 4 large acoustic neuromas--1 of the four not yet confirmed by surgery--and 2 inflammatory processes in the internal auditory meatus, but failed in 1 of intrameatal acoustic neuroma.

The findings of acute, subacute and chronic toxicity studies in rats and dogs with the new beta-mimetic agent 4-amino-alpha-[(tert.-butylamino)methyl]-3,5-dichlorobenzyl alcoholhydrochloride (NAB 365, clenbuterol) are reported. The longest period of investigation, with daily oral administration of the substance, was 18 months (rats) and 12 months (dogs). No abnormalities of any kind were found in the rat studies which could be attributed to the substance. The administration of clenbuterol to dogs produced microscopically small lesions in the myocardium which were not dose-dependent and which were localised entirely in the papillary muscle of the left ventricle. The reason for these lesions was that dogs react to the substance with severe tachycardia, as a consequence of a reduction in diastolic blood pressure produced even by very low oral doses. Oxygen deficiency occurs which affects particularly the papillary muscle. The response to hypoxia is better capillarisation. This causes an improvement in the oxygen supply, which in turn prevents the spread of existing necroses and the development of further lesions.
30 patients with Dupuytren's contracture were investigated by venous occlusion plethysmography of the index and ring fingers of both hands. The results are evaluated in respect to the clinical and electroneurophysiological findings. Special attention was given to the blood flow disturbances which have plethysmographically appeared to be a significant feature of Dupuytren's contracture and also to ulnar nerve lesions in individual cases. The finger venous occlusion plethysmography technique of Goetz (1934) has been further developed and a suitable apparatus constructed for the purpose of these investigations. Temporary vasopasm occurs in 77% of the patients suffering from Dupuytren's contracture when the fingers are cooled to 15 degrees C and a significant diminution of blood flow, as in the Raynaud syndrome, is evident. These neurovascular changes always appeared on the fingers of both hands and were similarly found in the region of the median nerve and of the ulnar nerve. They did not depend on the localization or the stage of the disease. 68% of the patients had symptoms suggestive of an ulnar nerve lesion, which corresponds with the findings of Mumenthaler (1961). In a comparison of the patients with normal plethysmographical findings and the patients with vasospasm, there is no correlation with the accompanying ulnar lesion. It is, thus, suggested that temporary vasopasm is not a consequence of the ulnar nerve lesion, but is related to an independent constitutional factor. In view of the high incidence of the ulnar lesion in patients with Dupuytren's contracture, a special neurological investigation is recommended and appropriate therapy, in addition to the fasiectomy, must be undertaken.
Based on the principles of an apparatus for the venous-occlusion plethysmography of the finger, which was developed by Goetz in 1934 and which was adapted for clinical usage by the authors of this article in 1971, a largely improved apparatus, which is also suitable for the usage in hospitals, is now presented. The various clinical methods of examination for the diagnosis of acrale bloodflow disturbances are discussed. Angioneuropathies (as for instance the Raynaud-syndrome) of diseases, which are connected with injuries of vessel-walls and stenosis resp. occlusion (M. Raynaud), can be differentiated with great certainty by means of the temperatures (15 degrees C and 32 degrees C), the quotient and the partial analysis of the volume-pulse form.
