Craniopharyngioma: based on 160 cases.

This paper is the outcome of an extensive retrospective study of the clinical and radiological manifestations of a large number of craniopharyngiomas from five leading neuroscience centres in the U.K. The literature about this tumour has been reviewed with particular reference to its origin and radiological manifestations.

Arachnoid cysts on computed tomography.

The appearances of arachnoid cysts on computed tomography are presented. They are well defined lesions with the same density as cerebrospimal fluid and are not contrast enhanced. Superficial lesions are biconvex or semicircular and may have a characteristic straight inner margin. Deep lesions and cysts between the cerebellar hemispheres are spherical and some may be difficult to differentiate from cystic neoplasms. The etiology and clinical manifestations of arachnoid cysts are also briefly discussed.

Computer tomography of the brain in Hamilton.

Computer tomography, a new noninvasive, rapid and easily tolerated technique of brain examination, has been evaluated by analysis of 1000 examinations. It is much more sensitive than conventional radiographic techniques and can resolve soft-tissue structures that differ only slightly in density. It also provides direct visualization of the ventricular system. The range of clinical applications is wide; it is especially useful in differentiating intracerebral hemorrhage from infarction, and in demonstrating many brain tumours, particularly supratentorial, though enhancement with a water-soluble contrast medium injected intravenously is often necessary.

Abnormal brain scans: Contribution of blood radioactivity to image.

Images obtained with 99m-Tc-labeled red blood cells were compared with 99m-Tc-pertechnetate scans in 26 patients with primary and secondary brain tumors, intracerebral infcts, and hemorrhage. The results indicated that the contribution of blood pool radioactivity to a positive brain scan was minor.
