[Influence of different sampling systems on evaluation of bacteriological and virological performance for an activated-sludge treatment plant (author's transl)].

Various quantitative evaluations of the performance of an activated-sludge treatment plant for viruses and bacteria removal and ameliorating physicochemical characteristics have been performed over a period of 24 hours, using successive and continuous samplings. The performance of the treatment plant evaluated using these two sampling systems shows no difference with the one obtained from punctual sampling. In every case, one can observe at the discharge a reduction amounting to 1 or 2 log. for the bacterial density and from 1/2 to 2 log. for the viral charge. Statistical study shows that whatever the sampling method used - punctual or successive and continuous over 24 hours - there is no fundamental difference between values of viral and bacterial densities. This comparison can only be established if a previous study has been made to determine the most representative hour to effect the punctual sampling.

[Cranio-encephalic scanography of the premature infant. Morphogenetic aspects. Radio-anatomical comparisons].

Fifty infants born before 38 weeks of amenorrhea have been studied by computerized tomography. The authors dwell on three points: the malleability of the cranial vault, the normal appearance of the germinal layer before 32 weeks, and the persisting hypodensity of the frontal region. The evolution of the morphology of the subarachoïdian cisterns, of the ventricular system and of the parenchyma are related between 28 weeks and term.

Photosynthesis and photorespiration in whole plants of wheat.

Wheat was cultivated in a small phytotronic chamber. (18)O(2) was used to measure the O(2) uptake by the plant, which was recorded simultaneously with the O(2) evolution, net CO(2) uptake, and transpiration. At normal atmospheric CO(2) concentration, photorespiration, measured as O(2) uptake, was as important as the net photosynthesis. The level of true O(2) evolution was independent of CO(2) concentration and stayed nearly equal to the sum of net CO(2) photosynthesis and O(2) uptake. We conclude that at a given light intensity, O(2) and CO(2) compete for the reducing power produced at constant rate by the light reactions of photosynthesis.

[Evaluation of the viral contamination of the sea water after the emission of an effluent into the sea (author's transl)].

Research of virus in the sea water has been made by the concentrated method of adsorption-elution on glass powder. --This method has enabled us to strike the balance on the concentration of virus in the sea water, from the emission to the bank. The frequency of isolation of virus in the bathing zone considered as healthy is very high. The concentration of virus is practically constant in the length of an axis, 200 m distant in comparison with the bank.--The increase of particles of virus in the sea, in the estuary of the emission, reflects in the same way in the bathing zone, 5 m away from the bank. The phenomenon of dilution of the effluent in the sea water doesn't seem to play a part.

[Distribution of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes in Nantes Hospital (1969-1978) (author's transl)].

Between 1969 and 1978 at the CHR of Nantes we isolated Streptococcus pneumoniae from 815 swabs taken from 591 patients and which provided 595 different strains. Serotyping of all the strains was carried out using the capsular reaction test. The prevalence of the different serovars varied according to the year and the type of swab. No resistant strains to benzylpenicillin or ampicillin were observed. There was significant resistance to sulphonamides and tetracycline : 24,3 and 29,6% respectively. The American vaccine containing the greatest number of serovars was effective for only 69,8% of the strains isolated in Nantes.

Transcutaneous PO2 monitoring (tcPO2) in the newborn during apneic spells, convulsions, cardiac catheterizations, and exchange transfusions.

Continuous transcutaneous PO2 recording improves the monitoring of critically ill infants and newborns submitted to invasive procedures such as exchange transfusions or cardiac catheterization. The measurement of tcPO2 in babies with apneic spells or seizures gives a better understanding of these respiratory disorders. It is reasonable to recommend the continuous monitoring of PO2 with a transcutaneous electrode in neonatal intensive care units.

[Hydranencephaly. Major cerebral lesions with normal neonatal neurologic behavior].

Case report of an 8 days old girl who had a discrete increase in head circumference associated with moderate EEG abnormalities. Familial and obstetrical histories were negative. Skull transillumination, contrast ventriculography and carotid arteriography led to the diagnosis of hydranencephaly. The cerebral lobes whose blood supply is dependent from the internal carotids were missing and were replaced by cavities. The normal neonatal neurological behaviour which did not change till death at 3 months, is a stiking phenomenon.
