The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect of cephaloridine on renal function, especially blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels in clinical cases. The study was performed in cases given the drug for prophylaxis of postoperative infections and treatment of various infections. Drip infusion of more than 2 g of cephaloridine (Ceporan) for 2 hours was given twice a day to 213 cases. The dose is thought to make it possible to maintain an effective blood level of the drug. Levels of blood urea nitrogen were measured before and after the administration in 197 cases and serum creatinine was measured in 116 out of 197 cases. Elevated levels of blood urea nitrogen were observed in 12 cases while abnormal serum creatinine levels were found in 8 cases. Transient and slight rising of blood urea nitrogen levels was observed in many cases of the prophylactic group due to postoperative catabolism or influence of the surgery. Bases on precise analysis of cases who showed abnormal levels of blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine, the levels were proved to improve or return to normal and to be unchanged. So that, it is said that the administration of the drug is not necessarily affect the renal function of clinical cases.

The percentages of labelled lymphocytes in smear preparations of mouse thymus were higher than those in similar preparations of mesenteric lymph nodes with either generally labelled tritiated deoxycytidine, [3H]CdR, or tritiated thymidine, [3H]TdR. Lymphocytes in the thymus cortex and in germinal centres of mesenteric lymph nodes were intensely labelled with [3H]CdR, whereas with [3H]TdR lymphocytes in the peripheral region of thymus and medullary cords of mesenteric lymph nodes were heavily labelled. The majority of lymphocytes in thymic cortex and germinal centres of mesenteric lymph nodes were labelled weakly with [3H]TdR. Thus, labelling patterns with [3H]CdR differed from those with [3H]TdR in lymphoid tissues of the mouse. Mouse lymphocytes can utilize [3H]CdR as a precursor molecule for cytosine and thymine in DNA. The ratio of radioactivity of thymine to that of cytosine was measured biochemically in DNA extracted from lymphocytes labelled with [3H]CdR. This radioativity ratio in thymus was higher than that in mesenteric lymph nodes. These results suggest that the metabolic activities of utilizing CdR for DNA synthesis differ within lymphocyte populations in various lymphoid tissues in the mouse.
Agglutinated platelets are known to release a factor that stimulates the growth of arterial smooth muscle cells or dermal fibroblasts. The present study was designed to see the effect of this platelet factor on epidermal cells. The growth of cultured epidermal cells and dermal fibroblasts obtained from guinea pig ear skin was observed using 10% platelet-rich serum or platelet-poor serum in the culture medium. These sera were prepared from fresh human blood according to the method described by Ross. The cell growth was checked by counting the number of cells in culture or by the uptake of labeled thymidine by the cells. The platelet-rich serum significantly stimulated the growth of epidermal cells as well as fibroblasts as compared with the platelet-poor serum. This implies that platelet factor released after injury to cutaneous vessels in trauma or inflammation plays an important role in initiating proliferation of epidermal cells and dermal fibroblasts.

Emission Mössbauer spectroscopic studies of 57Co-labelled [Co(phen)3]clO4)2 in host matrices [M(II)(phen)3](ClO4)2(M=Co, Fe, and Ni) indicate that the relative intensities of the anomalous species produced through the EC-decay depend on the kind of the host matrix. The largest intensity was observed with the cobalt (II) matrix, and the smallest with the iron (II) matrix. Emission spectra of 57Co-labelled [Co(2-CH3-phen)3](ClO4)2 2H2O in the matrix of [Fe(2-CH3-phen)3](ClO4)2 were also studied. The high-spin state (5T2) was predominantly observed at 4.2 K in the emission spectrum, while the low-spin state (1A1) was mainly observed in the absorption spectrum at 78 K. The results are discussed in terms of the stability of the lattice.
Pivmecillinam (PMPC), semisynthetic penicillin for oral use, was studied clinically and following results were obtained. 1) Twenty-eight patients with acute simple cystitis treated with the drug 200 mg/day for 4 days, clinical results were excellent in 23 cases and moderate in 5 cases. Six patients with chronic simple cystitis treated with the drug 400 mg/day for 7 days, clinical results were excellent in 4 cases, moderate in 1 case and poor in 1 case. Eight patients with complicated urinary tract infections treated with the drug 400 mg/day for 7 days, clinical results were excellent in 2 cases, moderate in 2 cases and poor in 4 cases. Overall effectiveness amounted to 88.1%. 2) Pivmecillinam was clinically effective in patients infected by Gram-negative bacteria except Pseudomonas aeruginosa. 3) No side effects were observed in all cases. The effectiveness of PMPC for acute simple cystitis was compared with that of talampicillin (TAPC), ampicillin (ABPC), amoxicillin (AMPC) and pivampicillin (PVPC) reported previously and PMPC was assessed as the most useful agent in these. Then, pivmecillinam should be chosen firstly as a chemotherapeutic agent for acute simple cystitis.

Free porphyrins, especially copro-, uro-, and protoporphyrin, were successfully separated by talc thin-layer chromatography (TLC), and were determined from the relationship of the weight and the area of porphyrins in the spot on the thin-layer plate. The results obtained from both the solvent extraction and the simple, rapid TLC method reported in this paper showed good correlation for coproporphyrin levels up to 400 microgram/1. The TLC method was applied to the determination of urinary coproporphyrin in lead workers and in rats.
