Radiographic appearance of the middle ear after ventral bulla osteotomy in five dogs with otitis media.

Radiographs of the middle ear were made in five dogs 60 to 78 months after ventral bulla osteotomy was performed to treat otitis media. The clinical results of surgery were considered satisfactory in four dogs and unsatisfactory in one. In 4 dogs with satisfactory results, radiographs demonstrated complete reformation of the bulla in 3 operated middle ears (3 dogs), with partial bulla reformation in the three middle ears (3 dogs). Radiographs in one dog with unsatisfactory results showed complete bulla reformation with no increase in lumen opacity. The proliferative bony response obliterating the middle ear previously reported in normal dogs after ventral bulla osteotomy was not seen in any of these patients.

Perceptions of the psychiatric nurse's role: a pilot study.

In this article, the authors report on a face-to-face survey of members of the public regarding the role of psychiatric nurses. One open-ended question was asked of 100 pedestrians in a city centre. The resulting data were analysed and then validated by a panel of senior psychiatric nurses. The researchers found a generally positive perception of the role, certainly in relation to the esteem in which nurses continue to be held, but detected that the stigma of mental illness still surrounds those who have to come in contact with mental health professionals. The researchers believe mental health nurses must be better prepared to articulate their contribution to mental health care to counteract public fear, and that the media can play an important role in this process.

Ebola haemorrhagic fever.

This article focuses on the management of a patient who was admitted to The Aga Khan Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with suspected Ebola haemorrhagic fever (Ebola HF). It defines the disease, symptoms and how it is spread, diagnosed, treated and prevented. Recommendations are made for management of Ebola HF in a hospital setting.

Comparison of two transdermal nitroglycerin systems: Transderm-Nitro and Nitro-Dur.

Sixty-four patients with stable angina pectoris were enrolled in a four-week, multicenter, office-based study to compare the adhesive properties of an patients' preferences for two transdermal nitroglycerin systems, Transderm-Nitro (TDN) and Nitro-Dur (ND). Each patient simultaneously wore one 0.2 mg/hr (formerly 5 mg/24 hr) TDN patch and one 0.2 mg/hr ND patch. At the first and last study visits, patients completed questionnaires that assessed preferences based on ease of application, handling, and removal; ease of removing the backing; overall adhesion; adhesion under certain conditions; comfort; curling or rolling; and skin irritation. Each day of the study, patients recorded the number of anginal episodes experienced, frequency of sublingual nitroglycerin use, patch adhesion, and problems at the sites of application or any other medical problems. Differences in adhesive properties were statistically significant in favor of TDN over ND (P less than or equal to 0.001). Of the TDN patches, 98.5% adhered completely, compared with 81.8% of the ND patches. No serious or unexpected adverse reactions occurred. Overall, patients preferred TDN to ND by a statistically significant margin (P = 0.0002).

Nutritional concerns of addicts in treatment.

Some of the subcultural phenomena affecting diet patterns of methadone patients have been utilized to derive principles of treatment intervention. Attitudes and values related to time, treatment personnel, and group identification are important cultural determinants of beliefs and behaviors affecting nutrition. The proposed program of intervention is based on ethnographic observations. This suggested program emphasized the inclusion of cultural identity, sense of uniqueness and group information sharing and reinforcement. These characteristics are valued highly in the informants' subcultural group, and are important components of acceptable proprosals for change within this group.
