A case of myasthenia gravis in association with benign orbital pseudotumor of lymphoid origin is described. To our knowledge, this is the second report of such a case.
IDU (5-iodo-2'-deoxyuridine), BVDU [(E)-5-(2-bromovinyl)-2'-deoxyuridine] and placebo ointments were studied for their effects on experimental herpes simplex (type 1) keratoconjuncitivitis in rabbits. When treatment was begun 65 h after virus inoculation, both BVDU and IDU prevented development of keratitis. Both BVDU and IDU were also effective in suppressing the severity of conjunctivitis, and in this respect, BVDU proved significantly better than IDU. When treatment was started 110 h after virus inoculation, BVDU proved significantly better than IDU in promoting healing of established keratitis.

Histopathological study of filamentary keratitis was done by using replica technique in five patients. The filaments are produced by sliding of the epithelial cells around small areas of focal degeneration of the superfical epithelium. In comparison to the filaments in other conditions, the filaments in KCS are smaller and thicker and do not show the torsional segment. The filaments contain degenerated epithelial cells and alcian blue-PAS positive mucoid material. Making a corneal replica may result in healing of filamentary keratitis.
The horizontal cell system in the retina of the fish Callionymus lyra L. was investigated light microscopically and electron microscopically. One type of rod horizontal cells, which are only found in the mixed ventral part, exclusively contacts spherules with lateral endknobs in the triads. Three types of cone horizontal cells occur. The first type, c-H1, contacts pedicles of pale and dark double cones and single cones. The processes always have a lateral position in the triads. This type has a constant contact pattern with the photoreceptor cells. The second type, c-H2, selectively contacts pedicles of pale double cones and the endbuds occupy a central position in the triads. In the single cone pedicles in the dendritic field of the c-H2 horizontal cell, the endbuds never seem to reach the triads. The third type, c-H3, only sends processes to pedicles of single cones where the endbuds occupy a central position in the triads. The synaptic connections of the horizontal cells of Callionymus differ from those observed in Nannacara anomala and Carassius auratus. The difference from the results obtained from Carassius is such that the information transfer model proposed for Carassius cannot apply to Callionymus.
Three days after herpes simplex virus inoculation, an increased amount of DNA and RNA was observed in the superficial epithelium cells of rabbit cornea. Histochemical staining demonstrated the development of acid mucopolysaccharides and the destruction of reticulin. In the early stages, on rare occasions, giant polykaryocytes with multiple micronuclei were seen. From 1 week after infection, more and more cells became rounded and shrunken. Cytoplasm of these cells might contain DNA diffusely interspersed with RNA. This DNA is probably viral in nature. The nuclei of these cells varied in shape, size, and staining intensity. Nuclear fragments were often observed in the cytoplasm. Stainings for acid mucopolysaccharides were strongly positive in the rounded cells. These cells fused to form syncytia Variable-sized pseudopodialike processes containing DNA and RNA extend from some of the rounded and liquefied cells toward other cells. In the later stages, development of ghost cells was seen. Histochemical methods demonstrated the deposition of acid mucopolysaccharides on their cell membranes. Necrosis was more often present in the late stages. Nuclear debris and deformed cells were encountered in such areas. On the healing of the keratitis, 3 months after inoculation, the cell cytology and staining reactions reverted to normal.
