Metabolic disease in mental retardation: a study in Texas.

Reported are the results of a study of patients admitted to the State Schools for the Mentally Retarded in Texas, over a two-year period from 1968-1970. Of 2029 cases, 185 were found on a detection battery screening to have possible metabolic disease. The report summarizes the findings on 93 cases studied in the metabolic ward at the Texas Research Institute.

The effects of antacid and propantheline on the absorption of oral ranitidine.

The effects of propantheline bromide and an aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide suspension on absorption of ranitidine were evaluated in 12 healthy volunteers according to a Latin square design. Ranitidine 150 mg was administered alone, with 30 ml antacid or preceded by 15 mg propantheline. Ten serum samples were obtained over 12 hours during each treatment period for measurement of ranitidine concentration. The antacid had no significant effect on ranitidine absorption, but propantheline increased the relative bioavailability of ranitidine by 22%. In addition, there was a trend, although not statistically significant, for propantheline to increase the maximum ranitidine serum concentration and the time to maximum serum concentration. Ranitidine can be administered concomitantly with the evaluated doses of antacid and propantheline without a clinically significant alteration in its absorption.

[Primary tumors of the cervico-brachial plexus].

Together with a description of two cases, the authors analyze all the cases they have been able to find in the literature and review the question from the histogenic, the anatomo-pathological, the clinical and the therapeutic points of view.

[Plasmapheresis and acute attacks of uveitis].

Our study concerns the effects of plasma exchange in acute attacks of posterior or total chronic uveitis. The treatment undertaken in 10 patients consisted of 8 plasma exchanges in a 2 weeks period, associated with a corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy. Immediately after the plasma exchanges, there was a significant improvement in visual acuity and a decrease in inflammatory activity in most patients (70%). Plasma exchange seems to be an interesting adjuvant in the difficult treatment of some uveitis.

Acute Disease↗

[Comparative study of 3 therapeutic methods for Pouteau Colles' fracture. Apropos of 97 cases].

Results of three therapeutic modalities used for the treatment of a homogeneous series of patients with a Pouteau Colles fracture are analyzed. Orthopedic treatment provided deceiving results. Pinning was, on the contrary, very effective, intrafocal pinning with immediate mobilization of the wrist appearing perfectly effective. Few complications were reported in contrast to plastered immobilizations. Good results were obtained in 80% of cases and functional recovery was rapid, indicating that this method represents undoubted progress when compared with conventional therapies.

[Latarjet's operation in recurrent antero-internal luxation of the shoulder].

Latarjet's operations as single therapy was performed in 52 patients admitted since 1976 with recurrent antero-internal dislocation of shoulder. There were no recurrences but three patients (6%) complained of residual instability. Effectiveness of results depends on use of a perfect technique : the bony ridge playing both an active and passive role should be level with the antero-internal border of the glenoid.
