[Iron reserves in blood donors. Should we prescribe systematic iron supplementation?].

1. Iron status has been assessed in 171 blood donors and 58 controls. 2. In men, ferritinemia was lower in blood donors, as compared to controls, but hemoglobin and erythrocytes values are found normal. 3. In women, both M.C.V. and ferritinemia were lower in donors. Ferritinemia could reach values below the threshold of iron deficiency. Microcytosis occurred 7 times. It appeared to be related either to the association of hypermenorrhea with blood donation, or to a number of 4 blood donations a year. 4. Iron supplementation was randomized. The comparison of the two groups of donors with and without iron supplementation showed that supplementation had no effect on male blood donors, but improved both ferritinemia and M.C.V. values in females. 5. However, systematic iron supplementation does not seem to be appropriate in France, as long as one excludes hypermenorrheic women, and if the periodicity of blood donation does not exceed three times a year for females.

In vitro medullary granulocytic progenitor (CFUc) cultures from 6 cases of granulocytopenias.

Medullary granulocyte progenitor (CFUc) cultures were grown in vitro from samples taken from 6 patients with toxic granulocytopenia caused by either thiamphenicol cephalothin or amidopyrine and who are now apparently cured. A decreased in the medullary concentration of CFUc has been observed and a calculated estimate shows that there was a decrease in their absolute number. A decrease in the number of CFUc per 10(5) metamyelocytes suggests a possible compensation by mitotic amplification between the stem cell and the differentiated cells. Two successive cultures have shown that the course of such medullary cultures is variable. The existence of medullary anomalies before drug toxicity as well as the practical consequences of the contrast between the apparent cure and the decrease in CFUc are discussed.

[HLA and leprosy in Dakar: distribution of histocompatibility antigens in leprous patients and their relationship to ENL reactions].

50 lepromatous patients among whom 34 shared repeating ENL reactions and a reference group of 150 blood donors were typed for HLA antigens. In the comparison of the lepromatous group to the reference group, the HLA-B 8 was the only antigen which turned out to be significantly increased within the lepromatous patients. Some changes reported by other authors have also been pointed out (decrease in HLA-A2 and HLA-A3, increase in HLA-AW 23 within the lepromatous patients) but those are not significant in this study. In the lepromatous group itself, not any significant change has been pointed out between the patients sharing ENL and those who did not show any. Nevertheless a non-significant increase in HLA-BW 35 in the patients with ENL is to be pointed out.

[Occurrence of syphilis in blood donors in Dakar and the importance of the new serological detection methods, TPHA and GAST].

The authors examined 2230 blood donors serums with the passive Haemagglutination Test for Syphilis (TPHA) and compared it to routine serology (Kline and VDRL). They found a rather important percentage (10.9%) of positive TPHA in the blood donors of Dakar. As a specific and sensitive test, the TPHA keeps its whole interest in case of false positivity, principally in tropical countries. 142 blood donors serums were also examined with the GAST (Groupamatic Automated Syphilis Test). This test is easy to be done and can be applied to large numbers of serums. It seems more reproductible and specific than Kline and VDRL reactions.
