[Application of the A.S.I.A. model to the risk management in the wood industry].

The ASIA model (assessment, surveillance, information audit) has been applied in wood work. The physicians charged of medical surveillance of workers were enrolled in a specialistic audit, concerning the main aspects of their preventive activity. Doctors significantly improved the quality of their surveillance programs, so identifying two cases of work-related illnesses (nasal cancer and poliposis). Even quality of risk assessment, and information of workers, were significantly improved after the audit. The ASIA model proved to be feasible and useful in wood risk prevention.

Reaction exothermia of 2 relining resins for temporary crowns.

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the reaction exothermia of 2 relining resins for temporary crowns. The resins used were Duralay, a methacrylate-based resin, and Protemp II, a bisacrylic resin. METHODS: The coronal parts of an adult molar and of an impacted one were used. Abutments were obtained from the crowns, while the radicular part was sectioned in order to insert a thermocouple into the pulpal chamber. During the experiment the tooth with the polymerising resin was put into an oral cavity simulator to keep a constant temperature. The thermal increase during polymerisation of the 2 resins was recorded for 6 minutes at 5 seconds intervals and with 1 and 2.5 mm dentin thickness (n = 10). Data were statistically analysed by variance analysis with Scheffe test. RESULTS: The intrapulpal thermal increase was significantly higher in relation to the type of resin (Duralay p < 0.0001), thickness (1 mm p < 0.0001) and type of dentin (young dentin p < 00001). CONCLUSIONS: In order to protect the pulp, during the direct relining of a temporary crown, it is recommendable to choose the best combination among resin, type of dentin and its residual thickness, besides adequate cooling techniques.

[From the Mailing List SIN: professional risks for the nephrologists: clinical risk and risk management].

An extensive debate on bacteraemias due to aquatic bacteria has recently developed in the Mailing List SIN. This topic was analyzed in two previous issues where the epidemics observed in two Dialysis Centers have been presented and discussed. The two experiences had in common the difficulty in identifying the source of contamination in industrial products commercialized as ''sterile''. In one case, the source of the epidemic could not be identified, in the other one it was discovered only incidentally thanks to a notice of the supplier company of the contaminated material. This underlines the importance of defining specific operating protocols in case of hospital epidemics and stresses the issues related to the professional risk and the potential legal implications.

[Risk factors present in the recreation areas of nursery schools].

In order to evaluate the playground risk factors, 45 nursery schools of a USL were investigated. The results show that the risk factors depend mostly on inadequacy of the playground equipment and of its installation and maintenance. Moreover the playground surfaces are frequently nonelastic and the first-aid kits insufficient. Pediatricians have a key position in scholastic accident prevention.

[Intestinal invagination. Analysis of cases].

16 cases of intussusception, occurred in the last 9 years in the Pediatric Department of the Ospedale di Circolo of Varese, are reported. Barium enema was carried out in 15 cases and the reduction of the intussusception, attempted in 5 of them, was obtained in 3 (20%). The low rate of the attempts of reduction by barium enema is consistently related to a delay in the diagnosis; 56% of the patients showed actually at the diagnosis the three main symptoms simultaneously: abdominal pain, vomiting, "currant jelly stool". The significant positive correlation (p less than 0.01) between the symptoms duration at the diagnosis and the hospitalization period points out that a correct treatment of the intussusception depends mainly on a precocious diagnosis.
