[Lens implantation in hypotonic bulbi (author's transl)].

For lens implantation a deep anterior chamber is required. In our experience this is best accomplished by mechanical compression to reduce the volume of the vitreous. Following extraction of the lens the anterior chamber fills spontaneously with air. Intraoperative damage to the corneal endothelial cells caused by contact with the pseudophakos can thus be avoided. The procedure also facilitates iris fixation sutures, excision of the anterior lens capsules, irrigation and aspiration.

Physical forces involved in pseudophacodonesis and iridodonesis.

Studies of high-speed motion pictures of the eyes of patients after extracapsular (EC) and intracapsular (IC) cataract extraction show that pseudophacodonesis and iridodonesis are the result of oscillations of the fluids in the anterior segment of the eye. These oscillations, initiated by movement of the eye, result in shearing forces on the corneal endothelium which may result in damage. Similar motion of the vitreous causes shearing forces which may damage the retina.

[Benign angiofollicular lymphoma of the eyelid (author's transl)].

The first case of benign angiofollicular lymphoma (Castleman) of the lower and upper eyelid is reported. The patient was a 79-year-old woman. The multifocal tumor was removed in two operations. The patient has since been free of complaints and the tumor has not recurred. This observation shows that Castleman's tumor must be included in the differential diagnosis of ophthalmologic benign and malignant lymphomas and pseudolymphomas. The diversity in nomenclature of this tumor expresses the varying pathogenetic and etiologic concepts. As in the present case, the majority of extrathoracal angiofollicular lymphomas of the hyaline-vascular type is obviously best interpreted as being hamartomas or choristomas. This does not exclude a poly-etiology, especially of the plasma cell type which is associated with general clinical symptoms.

[Lamellar corneal graft and transposition of a conjunctival flap for surgical treatment of pterygium (author's transl)].

In advanced primary and recurrent pterygium extensive excision and lamellar corneal grafting have been performed. Closure of the conjunctival wound is achieved by transposition of a temporal conjunctival flap to the excised area. In a follow-up period up to 15 months no recurrence have been observed. The functional and cosmetical results are satisfactory.
