[Effect of dipeptide vilon on emotional stress resistance in rats].

Effects of synthetic thymomimetic vilon on open field behaviour, immediate early gene c-Fos expression in paraventricular hypothalamus properties of organs sensitive to emotional stress, and characteristics of albumin in the blood plasma in male Wistar rats, were investigated and are discussed in the article. It is shown that intraperitoneal vilon injection rises the resistance against emotional stress according to prognostic indexes open field behaviour. Vilon administration also inhibits hypertrophy of the adrenals, involution of the thymus, and elevates concentration of albumin in the blood plasma. The number of Fos-immunoreactive neurons in the paraventricular hypothalamus was lower after vilon administration especially in rats resistant against emotional stress.

[Impulse activity of neurons in the lateral hypothalamus during microionophoretic administration of melatonin and noradrenaline in rats].

Microionophoretic administration of melatonin into the perineuronal space of lateral hypothalamic neurons in WAG and Fischer-344 rats decreased the firing rate and regularized activity of the cells. Moreover, the effects of melatonin completely blocked the activation of neurons and changes in their pulse activity produced by norepinephrine. The effects of melatonin on neuronal activity in behaviorally active stress-resistant WAG rats were more pronounced than in behaviorally passive stress-predisposed Fischer-344 rats. These data suggest that stress-protective activity of melatonin is associated with inhibition of the pulse activity of neurons in emotiogenic structures of the brain and changes in neuronal sensitivity to norepinephrine.

Structural and functional characteristics of neurons in the sensorimotor cortex of rats with different resistance to emotional stress.

Wistar rats behaviorally active in the open field test (resistant to emotional stress) are characterized by polymorphism of neurons in layer V of the sensorimotor cortex and the presence of hyperchromatic cells, which probably determines resistance to emotional stress in these rats. Atrophy of hyperchromatic neurons reflecting transient inhibition of cell activity was noted in Wistar rats subjected to stress. In the sensorimotor cortex of behaviorally passive animals (predisposed to emotional stress) groups of densely packed hyperchromatic cells and pronounced pericellular edema were revealed. In these rats stress caused irreversible changes in cortical neurons and death of some cells. The presence of ischemic cortical neurons in rats subjected to emotional stress suggests that cerebral hypoxia plays a role in structural and functional disorganization of the sensorimotor cortex during emotional stress.

[Sleep stages after psychoemotional exposure: individuality-dependent changes].

Sleep stages were studied in healthy subjects with the aid of a battery of tests involving questionnaires, psycho-tests, motor tests, polysomnography, and cardiomonitoring. An induced psychoemotional tension was shown to change the 1st sleep stage, to decrease percentage of the 2nd stage of the slow-wave sleep, to redistribute the delta-sleep, and to suppress the REM sleep mechanism. The cerebro-visceral function of increasing the heart rate and its variability in night sleep was also affected. Patterns of the sleep structure changes depended on personality characteristics of the subjects. Thereupon, individual programs should be used in studies of psychoemotional stress effects upon the sleep pattern.

[Dynamic stereotype as a systemic property of the brain].

Based on the theory of functional systems, the author has developed I. P. Pavlov's idea on the dynamic stereotype--"reality imprints". The parameters of reality, and the results of actions in particular, that meet the leading requirements of living organisms are shown to be dynamically imprinted as molecular engrams of an acceptor of results of actions on the structures involved in dominating motivation. Dominating motivations play a key role in extracting early formed acceptor engrams of results of activities in different functional systems.

[Connective tissue under emotional stress].

The data pointing to morphofunctional changes in connective tissues of rats after exposure to acute experimental stress are presented. These changes were shown to be dependent on resistance of animals to emotional stress. Animals predisposed to the emotional stress developed more pronounced changes in connective tissues evident as tissue hemorrhages and edema, accumulation of hyaluronic structures, and degranulation and devastation of mast cells. Water immersion stress in these rats resulted in a significant decrease in uronic acids in the skin, damages of endotheliocytes and disruption of plasmalemma and basal membrane of the wall of the aortic arch ascending segment.

[c-fos Gene expression during emotional stress in rats: blocking by delta sleep-inducing peptide].

An emotional stress induces an obvious immediate early gene c-fos expression in the brain limbic structures in the rats predisposed to emotional stress. Administration of the delta-sleep-inducing peptide (DSIP) was shown to inhibit the c-fos expression. It led to an obvious inhibition of the c-fos expression in paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus, medial and lateral parts of the septum of rats predisposed to emotional stress. This mechanism seems to play an important role in the DSIP anti-stress effects.

[Ulcer protective effect of melatonin during artificial simulation of desynchronization in rats].

The study was made on Wistar rats. A shift in endogenous biological rhythms was simulated by that in the light phase by 12 hours and evaluated by the shift in the rhythm of rectal temperature. Experiments revealed that desynchronization potentiated ulcerative processes in the rat stomach. The study demonstrated the protective effect of intraperitoneally injected melatonin to prevent the formation of ulcerative defects in the rat stomach during artificially simulated desynchronization.

[The reality imprinting" in systemic mechanisms of brain activity].

The paper presents the developed Pavlov's notion about dynamic stereotype--"imprintings of reality"--on the basis of the theory of functional systems. It is shown that parameters of reality and, in particular, the results of activities that satisfy the leading needs of alive organisms, were dynamically imprinted in a form of molecular engrams on the structures of acceptor of action results involved into dominant motivation. In different functional systems the leading motivations play the chief role in retrieval of earlier formed engrams of acceptors of action. General theoretical concepts about emotional and verbal forms of consciousness and their close interaction in human are developed.

[Ultrastructural changes in the aortic arch intima in rats with various resistance to emotional stress].

Experiments were performed on 24 male Wistar rats weighing 210 +/- 14 g. Depending on the activity in the open field test, all rats were divided into behaviorally active and passive subgroups. Water-immersion stress (2 hrs) followed by 2-hrs rest period was used as the model of acute emotional stress. Tissue samples from aortic ascending arch were taken from control and stressed rats immediately after decapitation and used for further electron microscopy. The number of micropinocytosis vesicles along the free and basal layers of the cytoplasm and the area of mitochondria were determined. Emotional stress was shown to intensify metabolic processes involving micropinocytosis vesicles between the aortic lumen and its wall. Passive rats display the most severe alterations induced by stress (damages of aortic endotheliocytes, partial regeneration of the plasmalemma by membranes of micropinocytosis vesicles, and decrease in the average area of mitochondria). Morphological equivalents of the initial stages of emotional stress-induced formation of fibrous changes in the aortic arch intima are believed to be found. Such changes can lead to the appearance of atherosclerotic patches.

[Theory of functional systems and integrative physiology].

The paper postulates that the theory of functional systems proposed by P. K. Anokhin has given an impetus to the understanding of the body's integrative activities. The functional systems are shown to be units of the activities. Individual functional systems in their characteristic processes of self-organization and self-regulation, hierarchic, multi parametric and consecutive interactions of the body's functional systems have integrative properties. The theory of functional systems have disclosed many unknown brain integrative properties: the specificity of ascending activating influences of subcortical formations on the cortex, various patterns of excitation convergence on cortical neurons, the specific features of chemical postsynaptic processes that are characteristic of each functional system. Particular emphasis is laid on the informational mechanisms of the integrative activities of functional systems.
