[Immunochemical study of the proteins of the bacterial membrane outer layers].

Incubation of Micrococcus lysodeikticus protoplasts with rabbit immunoglobulins containing antibodies against micrococcal membranes and a subsequent two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis of solubilized membrane antigens allowed to reveal four main antigens of the outer membrane, of which only two are accessible to trypsin attack. The outer antigens disappear after protoplast treatment with snail digestive juice (active substance - phospholipase) and after incubation of growing cells with cerulenin, the inhibitor of fatty acid biosynthesis. Electrophoresis of the "cerulenin" membrane proteins in the presence of SDS revealed the disappearance of five proteins with molecular weights of 120 000, 150 000, 100 000, 68 000 and 16 000. Goat antibodies against rabbit serum or Staphylococcus aureus Cowan I cells (binding IgG gamma-globulins for fragment Fc) being added to the solubilized micrococcal membranes from protoplasts pretreated with antimembrane rabbit gamma-globulins precipitate about 5% of membrane protein. This suggests that the membrane outer layer antigens make up to about 5% of total protein content. The distribution of the components between the outer and inner membrane layers is discussed.

Electrolyte changes and acid base balance after alcohol withdrawal, with special reference to rum fits and magnesium depletion.

70 chronic alcoholics in the withdrawal state, 45 with convulsions and 25 controls without convulsive seizures, were tested with respect to electrolyte changes and acid base balance in serum or blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It was of special interest to note that there was a partial independence between magnesium levels in serum and CSF. Thus the serum level has only a limited liability as to magnesium depletion suggested to be responsible for seizure precipitation. In the seizure group a slightly but significantly lower magnesium, potassium and calcium in CSF and a significant decrease of potassium and calcium in serum were revealed. In the nonzeizure controls a similar decrease of magnesium in serum and potassium in CSF was observed while serum potassium and calcium in CSF and serum remained in low normal range. In both groups there was a prominent respiratory alkalosis. The role of magnesium depression for seizure precipitation is discussed with respect to the concomitant changes of other electrolytes and acid base disturbances.

Biochemical responses in aquatic plants as markers of environmental contamination.

This short review gives several examples of the current status of xenobiotic biotransformation reactions and oxidative stress responses in plants as biomarkers of organic pollution in aquatic environments. Based on previous basic knowledge, several biomonitoring programmes have been applied successfully during the last decade.

Effect of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coating on the osteoconductivity of commercially pure titanium implants.

Formation of a calcium phosphate layer was studied on the surfaces of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite (PSHA) and sandblasted commercially pure (cp) titanium in simulated body fluid with ion concentrations similar to those of human blood plasma. The PSHA surface induced the formation of calcium phosphate surface layers, while the precipitation of calcium phosphate on sandblasted cp titanium was not detected. Histologic evaluation of in vivo tests demonstrated that implants with a PSHA coating enabled the growth of bone tissue into gaps with a depth of up to 1 mm without significant formation of intermediate fibrous tissue. In comparison to sandblasted cp titanium, implants with PSHA coating exhibited greater tolerance to unfavorable conditions during healing, such as gaps at the interface or primary instability of the implant. In the case of good primary stability of the implant, filling of the gap with fibrous tissue was observed for sandblasted cp titanium implants over the greater part of the surface of gaps with a depth of 0.3 mm. Direct contact of cp titanium implants with bone was achieved only when the press-fit implantation model was used.
