Existence of a Mr = 56,000 polypeptide associated with 10S DNA polymerase alpha was shown by production of a monoclonal anti-calf thymus 10S DNA polymerase alpha antibody secreted from a hybridoma line named 3H1. The antibody bound three polypeptides with Mr = 180,000, 56,000 and 32,000 in hydroxylapatite fraction of 10S DNA polymerase alpha by immunoblot. The antibody co-precipitated the polypeptides with the large polypeptide (Mr = 150,000-140,000) of 10S DNA polymerase alpha with the aid of second antibody. Among three polypeptides, the Mr = 56,000 polypeptide was co-purified with DNA polymerase alpha through DNA-cellulose chromatography and repeated sucrose rate-zonal centrifugations. The Mr = 56,000 polypeptide was still associated with 10S DNA polymerase alpha after second sucrose rate-zonal centrifugation, but the amount of it was reduced. The polypeptide was banded at pH 7.2-8.0 and displayed microheterogeneity in respect of isoelectric point by isoelectrofocusing with 7 M urea, and showed weak DNA-binding property after blotting onto a nitrocellulose. The antibody against the polypeptide precipitated DNA polymerase alpha from human, rat, and mouse, and Mr = 56,000 and 32,000 polypeptides were detected in these DNA polymerase alpha fractions by immunoblot. These results suggest that the polypeptide with Mr = 56,000 may take part in the DNA polymerase reaction.

An intratendinous tear of the supraspinatus tendon without communication with the joint or with the subacromial bursa occurred in a 31-year-old man. Repair of the cuff relieved the pain and led to functional recovery. Although the true cause of the unusual pattern of limitation of motion caused by this lesion remains unclear, it was associated with reflex muscle spasm around the shoulder, which was provoked by pain originating in the subacromial bursa secondary to the cuff tear. No comparable case seems to have been documented in the literature.
The present study shows the clinical values of SCC-Antigen, a subfraction of TA-4, for the management of squamous cell carcinoma. Serum SCC-Antigen levels of 2.0 ng/ml was designated as the cut-off value. Serum antigen levels were positive in 53.5% of cervical squamous cell carcinoma, and the changes in serum antigen levels reflected the disease progress. The antigen was also positive in cancer of vagina, vulva, lung or esophagus. To detect the early cervical cancer, flow cytometric analysis of the exfoliative cells was conducted, using anti-TA-4 serum, which was found to be particularly useful for the detection of early disease. It was concluded that the use of SCC-Antigen would be promising in clinical care.
A radioimmunoassay for a tumor antigen TA-4 of squamous cell carcinoma has been used for the management of cervical cancer. The present study shows the clinical value of the TA-4 assay for squamous cell carcinoma of various origins. Pretreatment serum TA-4 levels were detectable in 44.4% of cervical cancer, 47.1% of vaginal and vulvar cancer, 33.3% of lung cancer, 42.9% of esophageal cancer, and 10% of cancer of other origins. In 313 control cases, including other histologic types of malignancies or benign diseases, one case showed a positive TA-4 level. Serial determinations of serum TA-4 levels were performed in patients with squamous cell carcinoma, which revealed that changes in TA-4 levels were rapid and were helpful for monitoring the disease progress and for detecting the recurrent disease. These results indicate that the TA-4 assay would be a useful aid for the management of squamous cell carcinoma of various origins.
A radioimmunoassay for a tumor-antigen (TA-4) of squamous cell carcinoma was used to detect the recurrence in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. Of 17 patients who had recurrence, 15 cases showed reappearance of serum TA-4 levels. Reappearance of serum TA-4 was faster than other clinical signs of recurrence in 11 cases. These results indicated that TA-4 assay would be a useful aid for the detection of recurrence in cervical squamous cell carcinoma.
The present study was undertaken to assess age-related changes in the Purkinje's cells in the rat cerebellar cortex. The cellular and nucleolar volumes and the volume percentage of lipofuscin per cytoplasma were measured in six age groups. The number of Purkinje's cells was also counted. The cellular volume of rats aged 18, 24 and 30 months decreased significantly as compared with that of 3-month-old rats. The nucleolar volume of rats aged 12, 18, 24 and 30 months decreased significantly as compared with that of 3-month-old rats. The accumulation of lipofuscin in the cytoplasma of the Purkinje's cells was observed more or less in all ages. The degree of accumulation of lipofuscin in the Purkinje's cells increased with aging. The number of Purkinje's cells at the ages of 24 and 30 months decreased significantly as compared with that of 3-month-old rats.

The distribution of the trabecular microfractures in normal human proximal femora was investigated to see whether they were related to the femoral neck fracture of the elderly. In this study the epiphyseal scar was employed as an anatomical landmark in the proximal femur, since the authors' observation suggested that it remained throughout life and was located in constant connection with the margin of the articular cartilage. The medial aspect of the proximal femur was divided into three anatomical zones, which were called epiphyseal, subepiphyseal and subcapital ones, respectively. There were two areas in which trabecular microfractures concentrated; one was about the lateral end of the epiphyseal scar and another the subepiphyseal zone. Few microfractures were noted on the principal compressive trabeculae. A femoral neck fracture of the elderly usually provides a fracture line running from the lateral end of the epiphyseal scar down to the subcapital zone. Thus the fracture takes place just within the area of concentration of trabecular microfractures laterally, whereas it passes caudad to the medial group of microfractures. The authors hypothesize that the trabecular microfractures arising about the lateral end of the epiphyseal scar may have an etiological significance for the femoral neck fracture, in contrast that those in the subepiphyseal zone may not.

The present study was carried out to examine antitumor activity of extracts from Fusobacterium nucleatum culture supernatant. The extracts were prepared as sediment fractions by ethanol precipitation, isoelectric point precipitation and proteolytic enzyme-treatment. An ethanol fraction obtained by addition of 60% ethanol to the culture supernatant showed effective antitumor activity to ascites and solid type tumor of Ehrlich carcinoma and also to solid type tumor of Sarcoma 180 in ICR mice. A sediment fraction extracted by adjusting an ethanol fraction to pH 4.0 was also found to give distinctive antitumor activity to Ehrlich ascites carcinoma. This fraction was further treated with pronase to eliminate free nucleotides, and then ultrafiltrated. The pronase-treated fraction gave better antitumor activity to both ascites and solid type tumor of Ehrlich carcinoma or Sarcoma 180. The ratios (%) indicating antitumor activity ranged from 131 to 188% even at 4-8 weeks after the tumor cell inoculation.
