Hypopigmentation in leprosy.
Hypopigmentation of macular leprosy lesions was not found to correlate with cellular infiltrate and AFB load in tissues. It is felt that hypopigmentation is in some way related to neural involvement.

Cervical cancer, despite its declining incidence in the developed countries, is still an important cancer in the less-developed world. The mortality and incidence trends for some of the countries in the Pacific Basin are presented. Among the high-risk communities and populations are Colombia (Cali), New Zealand (Maoris), El Paso, Texas (Latin Americans), California (blacks), Hawaii (Hawaiians), Singapore (Chinese and Indians), Hong Kong, Philippines (Manila), New Caledonia (Melanesians), Alaska (American Indians), Fiji. The major risk factors are summarized, with age at first coitus as the key factor; some doubts are expressed about the validity of multiple sexual partners and circumcision of male partners as risk factors. The likely role of herpesvirus is still being studied, and the possible increase in incidence of cervical cancer among younger women could be attributed to greater sexual promiscuity in that group. Some suggestions for future research are made.
The effect of oxyclozanide, hexachlorophene, nitroxynil, rafoxanide and diamphenethide on malate dehydrogenase activity of homogenates of Fasciola gigantica, Fasciolopsis buski and Paramphistomum explanatum was investigated. The ratio of oxaloacetate reduction to malate oxidation in homogenates of Fasciola gigantica, Fasciolopsis buski and P. explanatum was 4.5:1, 3.6:1 and 5.2:1 respectively. Oxyclozanide and rafoxanide at 10(-3) M inhibited enzyme activity by 100% in homogenates from all three species while hexachlorophene at 10(-3) M also caused 100% inhibition in homogenates from Fasciola gagantica and P. explanatum but only 65% of malate oxidation in Fasciolopsis buski homogenates. Nitroxynil at 10(-3) M produced 60% inhibition in F. buski homogenates yet had little effect at this concentration on preparations from the other species. Little inhibition was seen with diamphenethide, even at high concentrations. Rapid death of Fasicola gigantica and P. explanatum resulted in vitro when 10(-3) M oxyclozanide, hexachlorophene, nitroxynil or rafoxanide, were added to the incubation medium. Fasciolopsis buski was killed by 10(-3) M oxyclozanide but at this concentration the remaining compounds only caused reduced activity. Assay of malate dehydrogenase following drug treatment in vitro failed to show any appreciable reduction in enzyme activity in Fasciola gigantica and P. explanatum but oxyclozanide and hexachlorophene produced inhibition in Fasciolopsis buski. The mode of action of these compounds is discussed.

The classical approach to management of intestinal hemorrhage due to typhoid ulceration has been conservative. In, however, the event of massive, persistent and life-threatening hemorrhage not responding to conservative measures, early surgical intervention is life-saving, controls typhoid toxemia rapidly and presents no special difficulties. A right hemicolectomy is recommended. Four such patients treated by us with bowel resection have had an uneventful recovery.
The efficiency of mercurascan on prolongation of skin allograft survival was found to depend on the sex of experimental animals. Long-term treatment of the recipients by MSC in the mouse strain combination B10--B10.LP (donor X recipient, difference in non-H-2 loci) was more efficient in females than in males. The immunosuppressive effect of MSC was weak. MSC had no effect on the survival time of skin or heart allografts in a strain combination with limited H-2 differences [B10.D2--M(504)]. The effect of MSC on the cell membrane was followed in vitro by measurement of the rate of H-2 antigen redistribution on lymphoid cells of animals treated in vivo by MSC. The rate of redistribution on lymphoid cells from MSC-treated females was decreased; no effect was observed in the case of cells from treated males.
