Osmoregulation in a parasitic nematode, Setaria cervi.

Studies on osmotic and ionic regulation in Setaria cervi indicate that it can osmoregulate in hypertonic solutions but not in hypotonic solutions. The depression of the freezing point (delta degrees C) of host's peritoneal fluid was -0.71 degrees C.

Dermatomic distributions of hypopigmented macular lesions of leprosy: neural dependence of melanocytic functions.

Dermatomic analysis of the distribution of the hypopigmented patches of leprosy has revealed a pattern wherein patches are most frequent in dermatomes of the brachial plexus, decrease gradually in frequency in succeeding spinal segments and increase again in dermatomes of the lumbar plexus. The predilection of hypopigmented patches for certain dermatomes may be a reflection of easy vulnerability of the neural pigmentary mechanism and/or a reflection of selective multiplication of M. leprae in nerves of certain dermatomes, even though the organisms might have been seeded all over the body by hematogenous spread. These preliminary observations are discussed.

Changes in muscarinic binding in distant brain regions showing neuronal losses after folic acid injections into the substantia innominata.

Injection of folic acid (FA) into the nucleus substantia innominata (NSI) was found to decrease [3H]quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) binding in the frontal cortex, pyriform cortex, amygdala, and the NSI itself without changing the KD. Binding in the thalamus, caudate nucleus, hippocampus, and substantia nigra was not affected. [3H]Flunitrazepam binding was unchanged in all eight regions studied. Previous work indicates FA injections into the NSI produce epileptiform activity and cause loss of GABAergic and possibly other neurons in the frontal and pyriform cortices, the amygdala, and thalamus. The reductions of [3H]QNB binding in the first three of these regions are interpreted as indicating that many of the neurons lost are cholinoceptive, a finding that supports the previous hypothesis that activation of cholinergic projections from the NSI is an important part of the mechanism of cell loss in these regions.

Demethoxyrapamycin (AY-24,668), a new antifungal antibiotic.

Demethoxyrapamycin is a new antifungal antibiotic which is co-produced with rapamycin by Streptomyces hygroscopicus. It was isolated as a minor component during recovery of rapamycin. Its antifungal and antitumor activity is compared with that of rapamycin.

Variations in clinical and histopathological classification of leprosy--a report and a plausible explanation.

Biopsies of macular hypopigmented lesions, in twenty one untreated cases, representing the whole spectrum of leprosy, revealed a high incidence of disagreement between clinical and histopathological classification. It was not observed in macular tuberculoid and indeterminate cases but was seen in borderline and lepromatous leprosy, with highest incidence in borderline leprosy. This has been explained on the basis of complex nervous system with a mosaic of anatomical and physiological subunits, modulating different types of responses including inflammation, through release of peptides and/or enzymes at the nerve endings in the peripheral tissues including skin.
