We examined an infant whose rare fundus changes were similar to those seen in the early stage of gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina, or in Aicardi's syndrome. The slightly larger than normal and whitish optic disk, mottled posterior pole of the retina and several atrophic patches around the optic disk were found ophthalmoscopically. These lesions were bilaterally symmetric. Hyperornithinemia was not noted. A CT scan of the brain was normal, and agenesis of the corpus callosum was not found. Convulsions and spasms did not occur. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of central regional total choroidal vascular atrophy in Japan.
Methylprednisolone was given to 8 patients receiving CDDP-containing chemotherapy. Of 8 patients, 7 patients achieved complete relief of nausea and emesis and 1 patient obtained partial elimination of symptoms. All these patients had consistent history of severe nausea and emesis before the methylpredisolone trial. At present, a potential effect of methylprednisolone on chemotherapy has not been known. In a case of testicular cancer the titer of tumor markers decreased straight on a table of logarithms.

Various T-cell mitogens induced high levels of circulating gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) in mice that had been pretreated with Propionibacterium acnes. Administration of lipopolysaccharide, a B-cell mitogen, to these mice also caused pronounced production of IFN-gamma in addition to IFN-alpha and IFN-beta. The enhanced induction was most marked at about 1 week after the pretreatment.

By means of a computer system, the two-dimensional projections of a three-dimensional random wire figure, rotated clockwise (CW) or counterclockwise (CCW) about the vertical axis, were produced and displayed on a CRT. Generally the stimulus display appeared as an object rotating in depth, changing direction of movement frequently from clockwise rotation to counterclockwise, and vice versa. In the experiment, the three subjects observed the displays of three different types of projection, two polar projections and a parallel one. They were instructed to judge the direction of the seen motion and asked to report it using the button-switches. Both duration of the rotation perceived in either direction and frequency of the apparent reversals between those two were measured from the output sheets of a pen-recorder. The results showed the effects of the type of projection. (1) The veridical motions were perceived more continuously and durably in the polar projections than in the parallel one, (2) the opposite relation was found with the nonveridical motions, and (3) the reversals of moving direction were seen more frequently in the parallel projection than in the polar ones.

When early cancer of the colon and rectum is defined as in early gastric cancer, i.e., invasion is limited to the mucosa and submucosa, 38 lesions from 35 patients of early cancer of the colon and rectum were detected during the last 20 years. The macroscopic and histologic findings included cancer-containing adenoma in 35 lesions from 32 patients. When the diagnostic methods were compared in 33 cases of early cancer of the colon and rectum, it was found that positive or suspicious cancer was obtained by an x-ray study in 5 of 18 cases examined (28%), by endoscopy in 19 of 31 cases (61%), by cytologic methods in 18 of 21 cases (86%), by biopsy in 19 of 25 cases (76%) and by polypectomy under direct vision through an endoscope in 13 of 14 cases (93%). When both biopsy and cytologic studies were performed in combination with endoscopy (20 cases), either of them was positive in all cases. These results indicate the possibility of correct diagnosis in many cases through the combined use of the cytologic method and biopsy without polypectomy, if the location is previously checked. On the other hand, 104 polyps from 90 patients were removed by means of the snare-electrocautery technique with the use of coagulation current during the last 4 years. The histologic findings revealed cancer-containing adenoma in 13, even in benign appearing polyps and in small polyps 1.0 cm or less in diameter. These results indicate that diagnosis of early cancer of the colon and rectum is difficult without polypectomy, if cancer is not previously suspected.
The autopsy case of an 80-year-old female with pseudomyxoma peritonei arising in the left ovary is reported. The patient was admitted with complaints of anorexia, sense of fullness and abdominal distension of two months' duration, and died of intestinal obstruction four months later. The autopsy revealed extensive tumor dissemination over the entire peritoneal cavity without any visceral invasion or distant metastasis. A part of the sigmoid colon showed marked stenosis and perforation with abscess formation. Histologically, the tumor was composed of various sized multiple cysts which were completely or incompletely lined by a layer of mucin-producing columnar epithelial cells with moderate nuclear hyperchromatism, and of a papillary pattern in some parts, indicating low grade malignancy.
The study was made to ascertain whether the radiographs of the mandible of patients with familial polyposis of the colon show osteomas. Orthopantomography of the mandible was taken in 10 cases of familial polyposis of the colon and 6 cases of the unaffected family members. And radiographic and histological studies were performed in another autopsied case. As a result, radiographic studies revealed sclerotic masses of the mandible in 10 of the 11 cases. In some cases, the changes were also found in the maxilla. The number of sclerotic masses ranged from 2 to 11, and they were associated with odontomas in 2 cases and impacted teeth in one case. Two of the 6 unaffected family members were found to have one or two sclerotic masses. At autopsy of a case died of cancer of the sigmoid colon, a radiographic study of the excised mandible revealed 11 sclerotic masses measuring 5 mm in diameter each, as well as one impacted tooth. A bucco-lingual cross action through the mandible in the canine area revealed central osteomas. Histological examination showed the osteomas were composed primarily of mature, lamellar bony tissue.
