Differentiating diffuse undifferentiated small-cell carcinoma of the thyroid from malignant lymphoma is difficult. A case of small-cell carcinoma was studied by electron microscopy and is reported here to illustrate the value of electron microscopy in separating epithelial thyroid tumor from lymphoma. Ultrastructurally, the tumor was composed of cells possessing occasional intercellularjunctional complexes and spaces with microvilli. There were abundant free ribosomes and well-developed rough endoplasmic reticulum in the cytoplasm. Golgi apparatus, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, membrane-bound cytosomes, and centrioles were also evident. Numerous swollen mitochondria were seen in some tumor cells. A few large tumor cells characterized by abundant cytoplasm containing few mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum and numerous microfibrils were also observed. A few collagen fibers, lymphocytes and plasma cells were present among tumor cells. No basement membranes nor virus-like particles were seen.

The chromenes precocene I (7-methoxy-2,2-dimethylchromene) and precocene II (6,7-methoxy-2,2-dimethylchromene) extracted from Ageratum houstonianum and A. conyzoides have been analysed by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. Separation was achieved using a C18 column eluted with a linear gradient of acetonitrile and water. Precocenes I and II in the essential oils were determined to be 270 +/- 23 and 482 +/- 34 mg/mL in A. houstonianum, and 687 +/- 21 and 20 +/- 2 mg/mL in A. conyzoides.

Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease in the United States and is a major contributing cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with diabetes. Despite conventional therapy to improve glycemic and blood pressure control the incidence of diabetic nephropathy is reaching epidemic proportions worldwide. As the major pathologic feature of diabetic nephropathy is diffuse mesangial matrix expansion, the pro-sclerotic cytokine transforming growth factor-beta, TGF-beta, is a leading candidate to mediate the progression of the disease. Numerous studies have now demonstrated that TGF-beta is a key factor in experimental models of diabetic kidney disease as well as in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Recent studies have begun to explore the mechanisms by which TGF-beta is stimulated by high glucose and how TGF-beta exerts its matrix-stimulating effects on renal cells. TGF-beta may also be involved in mediating the vascular dysfunction of diabetic kidney disease via its effects on the key intracellular calcium channel, the inositol trisphosphate receptor (IP(3)R). As there is substantial evidence for a cause and effect relationship between upregulation of TGF-beta and the progression of diabetic kidney disease, future studies will seek to establish specific targets along these pathways at which to intervene.
Four head measurements were taken on a sample of 45 MZ and 101 DZ twin pairs, their 125 singleton siblings, 104 fathers and 103 mothers in 146 Punjabi families living in Chandiagarh, India. The data indicate stronger genetic determination for the gross head size than its different components. Apart from genetic factors the role of environmental factors in the transmission of these traits is discussed. No higher maternal effect in the transmission of these traits have been found in the present data. However, on the contrary a higher paternal effect is indicated. The heritability estimates from siblings and twin data are higher than those from parent-offspring data. The influence of dominance factors in the transmission of head height is also suggested.
The relationship of early and late menarche with adult body dimensions has been studied on a sample of 147 young adult women drawn from an urban Punjabi population of Chandigarh and Ludhiana. The results indicate that girls with early menarche (age 10 to 11) have significantly smaller skeletal dimensions (both longitudinal and transverse) and more subcutaneous fat than those with average or late menarche. The girls with late menarche have on average more height for weight than early maturers. Results indicate that there is a biological determinant of the observed association between menarcheal age and fatness and adult body size.
