[Cytodiagnosis of central nervous systems tumors: comparative study of cytological (CSF) and histological results (author's transl)].

From a group of 52 tumours of the CNS it was possible to make a study of 35 (10 primary and 25 metastatic) to see if the nature of the neoplasm could be established from an examination of the cells of the CSF, comparing the results with those obtained by histological examination of the tumour tissues. There are very few dependable criteria to be found in the cells sedimented from the CSF (secretory activity; degree of differentiation) so, generally, only a determination as to whether the tumour is primary or metastatic, and if epithelial or mesodermal, can be made. Organ specificity can be identified only as regards the metastatic hypernephromas and thyroid carcinomas.

[1st report on programmed chemotherapy of ovarian carcinoma].

A prospective study with regard to a cytostatic drugs combination treatment, partly synchronized and carried out in team work, of advanced ovarian carcinoma is being accomplished at the II. Women's Clinic of the University of Munich. The team consists of one oncologically orientated internal specialist, one radiotherapist, and one surgeon. The therapeutic procedure should be discussed; a report is given about the experiences gained so far in 41 patients, i.e. until May 1st, 1975.

[The operative treatment of endometriosis externa (author's transl)].

The difficulty of pretherapeutic demonstration of endometriosis externa (at best about 50% correct diagnoses) requires histological confirmation. This demands a surgical procedure in which is best to remove all the endometrioses. The radical treatment accompanying elimination of ovarian function is largely unproblematic. Therapy with modern drugs and also surgery may fail in the conservative procedure; The combined operative and medicinal therapy integrate the advantages of both methods and cancel out their disadvantages. The significant role of the vaginal operation, especially of the diagnostic and therapeutic operation oposterior colpocoeliotomy is emphasized.

[Injuries, --causes and mechanics of motor vehicle side impacts].

In 228 vehicle-accidents the incidence of side-impact was 25%, being second to frontal impact. 20% of passengers involved sustained severe trauma (AISm 3 - 5). Characteristic of side-impact is a higher trauma rate of upper body with relative sparing of the cervical spine. Pelvic and abdominal injuries are rare but usually severe. The high risk for head and thorax is shown by the "absolute-trauma-index" (incidence x severity of trauma). Severity of trauma rises with vehicle-deformation and is more severe on the side of the impact.

[Demonstration of position variations of the female ureter in the work urethrocystocolporectogram].

With wick urethrocystocolporectography, an improved type of colpocystorectography, the form and undisturbed function of the urethra at rest, and during holding and pressing, may be optimally observed. The simultaneous picture of the female pelvic organs allows conclusions to be drawn as to the statics and dynamics of the viscera, as well as the functional strength of the pelvic floor. Illustrations show the behavior of the female urethra accompanying vertical and rotatory descensus, and prolapse.

[Effects of 4-hydroxypentenal on the noncancerous and the cancerous ectocervix uteri hominis (author's transl)].

PROBLEM: 4-hydroxy-2,3-transpentenal (HPE) represents the 5-C-homologue of a series of hitherto unknown alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes. The marked inhibition of DNA-biosynthesis by these chemical compounds, particularly by HPE, suggests blocking of mitosis by HPE due to direct action on the S-phase. It is known that DNA-biosynthesis as well as energy metabolism are generally more disturbed by HPE in animal tumor cells (Ehrlich ascites and solid tumors, NK/Ly sarcoma 37, sarcoma 180, plasmocytoma G, murine Harding-Passey melanoma) than in normal cells (liver, kidney, jejunum, spleen, thymus); for details see BICKIS et al. 1969; RINDLER et al. 1970; KAPFER et al. 1972). After systemic administration of HPE the concentration of the cytotoxic agent in the blood caysed a bituceabke but merely selective inhibition of the metabolism in experimental animal tumors; however, it was not sufficient to produce therapeutic results. The low stability of HPE in the blood and in the peritoneal cavity is to be attributed to its affinity to SH-groups. Therefore the biological tests had to be confined to the local administration of HPE. In this histological study of the action of HPE the substance was administered directly to the human portio vaginalis uteri (ecto- and endocervix) in cases of carcinomatous alterations, in cases of non-carcinomatous affections as well as in normal portions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this test 42 women were treated with HPE. 3 patients were observed clinically only, the other 39 cases were investigated also histologically. The histological studies were performed on the extirpated uterus (36 cases), the resected portio (1 case) and only on a conus (2 cases). In 17 of these patients examined histologically the portio was clinically free of pathological symptoms. They suffered from such more or less commonplace gynecological disorders as displacement of the uterus, incontinentia urinae relativa, uterus myomatosus, endometriosis and cystical adnexal tumors. 7 patients suffered from ectopies, 8 from Ca coli uteri, 7 were affected by invasive cancer of the cervix. 8 of the patients were older than 50 years, the others were aged between 25 and 50 years. Mode of HPE administration: 1. Application of a small HPE-soaked linen patch fixed on a Sta Seal impression of the vagina (Sta Seal=dental silicon impression paste). 2. Application by means of a small linen patch in a portio cap. The inner surface of a portio cap corresponding to the vaginal uterus in shape and size was coated with a circular linen patch. The unneeded segment was cut off. After moistening with the aldehyde (HPE) it was fit tightly to the inner surface of the cap and, in situ, to the portio surface as well. In several cases the portio did not fill the cap completely and did not contact the tissue in the region of the os uteri. Consequently, there the aldehyde effect was lower than in the lateral regions of the portio. Therefor 3...

[Kinetics of lithium].

After administration of easily soluble or ready dissolved lithium salts two phases can be defined in the changes of the blood level, and three in the case of lithium salts with a lesser solubility in water. The first phase from the time 0 to tmax is denoted by a massive invasion into the blood, this is counteracted by the beginnings of absorption into the tissue and elimination through the kidneys. In the second phase the absorption into the blood is returned to a constant even distribution; the absorption in the tissue and renal excretion rise notably. When the distribution is completed, the renal excretion is dominant. The kinetics of lithium are independent of the salt used. The salt, however, because of its solubility in oral administration can influence the absorption kinetics, tmax and the absolute blood level. By using Li2CO3 with a suitable speed of solubility a depot effect can be shown.
