A case of amputation neuroma presenting proptosis.

A case of amputation neuroma, presenting incidious proptosis, was reported in a 44-year-old man. To the best of our knowledge the case seems to be the first report of amputation neuroma caused by trauma in the orbita.

Retinal venous-venous anastomoses and capillary aneurysms in juvenile glaucoma.

Two patients with juvenile glaucoma, a 12-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman, were noted to have venous-venous anastomoses and capillary aneurysms of the retina. Their intraocular pressures had exceeded the diastolic pressure of the central retinal artery for months. Accompanying the successful surgical reduction of the intraocular pressures, these changes in the retinal vessels promptly reverted or disappeared. We consider that these capillary aneurysms and venous-venous anastomoses are the sequelae of the prolonged elevation of the intraocular pressure.

The corneal endothelium in xeroderma pigmentosum.

The corneal endothelia of 8 xeroderma pigmentosum patients were evaluated by means of a specular microscope. All cases but 1 showed decreased cell density and all cases of this series showed an increased coefficient of variation in cell area, compared to that of normal persons. The regression analysis between the cell density and age revealed a close affinity to that of the normal aging process when the ultraviolet-survival lethal dose of each patient was taken into consideration. The loss of corneal endothelial cells in the xeroderma pigmentosum patients may be caused at an extraordinary high rate, in proportion to their clonogenic ultraviolet-survival rate.

Defect of OKT4 antigen epitopes on normal human lymphocytes found in Japan.

Membrane surface antigens on peripheral blood lymphocytes were analyzed by a laser flow cytometry system using monoclonal antibodies. Four normal subjects among 1,998 normal and diseased groups were found whose lymphocytes were not detected by OKT4 monoclonal antibody, while Leu3a and KOLT-1, which were also specific for helper/inducer T-lymphocytes as OKT4, were present in these subjects. The cases with the defect of the OKT4 antigen suggest that there is some modification of the antigen, lack of epitopes, or genetic polymorphism in the appearance of the OKT4+ cell surface antigen on normal human lymphocyte.

Abnormality of helper/suppressor T cell ratio in patients with hemophilia.

Lymphocyte subpopulations in patients with hemophilia were analyzed. The results were compared with those in age- and sex-matched controls. The patients had been receiving blood and blood products including Factor VIII or Factor IX for a number of years as required at the time of the onset of the disease. Heparinized peripheral blood was used in direct tests for cell marker analysis with OKT4, OKT8 and OKT11 monoclonal antibodies. There were less OKT4+ cells in the hemophiliac blood as compared with the controls, while both the groups had the same number of OKT8+ cells. As a result, the OKT4/OKT8 ratio was markedly depressed in the hemophiliac group and the conversion of the OKT4/OKT8 ratio was observed in the group of patients receiving long-term therapy with anti-hemophiliac products. Alteration of lymphocyte subpopulations in patients with hemophilia in relation to antihemophiliac therapy was discussed.

Surface markers of peripheral blood lymphocytes in Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease.

The cell membrane markers on peripheral blood lymphocytes of 10 patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) were analyzed by laser flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies. Seven patients with active uveitis and 98 normal control subjects were also studied. The percentage of OKT3+, OKT4+ and OKT11+ cells were significantly lower while OKIa1+ cell were higher in VKH compared to controls. The percentage of cells reacting with monoclonal antibodies were slightly affected during steroid therapy, but returned to the pretreatment level after cessation of the therapy. OKIa1+ cells were shown to be increased in active uveitis while percentages of cells with other cell markers remained unchanged when the results were compared with that of the control. The findings suggest that the analysis of cell membrane markers on lymphocytes in VKH could be a significant parameter in clinical medicine.
