Experimental study of fetal liver transplantation.

Fetal liver cells function as liver and bone marrow cells. The direct and indirect effects of fetal liver cell transplants on liver and/or bone marrow failure was investigated in rat experiments. Outbred Wistar, inbred Lewis and F344 fetus rats (18-20 days) were used as donors; Wistar and Lewis rats (210-280g) were used as recipients. D-galactosamine (1.0-1.85g/kg) was administered intraperitoneally inducing acute liver failure. TBI, Co60 1000 Rads, was given inducing bone marrow failure. Donor liver cells were prepared using the following four methods: 1) simple liver homogenation; 2) centrifugation by percol gradient into different fractions; 3) arginine deficient culture; and 4) pronase culture. Preliminary observations of the transplant effect of fetal liver cells on liver and/or bone marrow failure is described.

New intraoral x-ray fluorographic imaging for dentistry.

A new dental x-ray fluorographic unit has been developed. This unit is composed of small intraoral x-ray tube, a compact x-ray image intensifier, and a high-resolution TV system. The purposes for developing this equipment were to (1) directly observe the tooth during endodontic procedures and (2) reduce x-ray exposure to the patient and the dentist. The radiation exposure can be reduced to about 1/600 the exposure used with conventional dental film. In clinical trials, a satisfactory fluorographic dental image for endodontic treatment was obtained with this new device.

Oxidation of plasma free fatty acids in nonshivering thermogenesis of rats treated chronically with norepinephrine and thyroxine.

In rats treated chronically with norepinephrine and thyroxine, enhanced nonshivering thermogenesis was observed, with a concomitant increase in the utilization of plasma free fatty acids (FFA). The increased utilization of plasma FFA was characterized by a more preferential increment in the oxidation of FFA in tissues rather than that in the uptake of FFA by tissues. These biochemical findings were accompanied by an increased mitochondrial mass in red fibers of skeletal muscle. Both biochemical and morphological changes of a similar nature were found in cold-acclimated rats.

Mortality and causes of death in the aged with organic brain symptoms.

By various mental status rating methods, 363 aged residents at a nursing home (aged 80 years on the average) were previously evaluated with regard to chronic brain syndrome (CBS), and now at two and four years thereafter, the relation between mortality and the degree of CBS was statistically tested. The results showed that the severer the CBS, the higher the mortality, with significant difference. In 136 autopsy cases, the primary cause of death was investigated. The results showed no significant difference in the cause of death, either between dementia and non-dementia groups or between groups of mild, moderate and severe CBS.
