A pattern of craniofacial and limb defects secondary to aberrant tissue bands.

Seven infants have been studied who have a similar pattern of severe craniofacial and limb anomalies associated with aberrant tissue bands. The craniofacial anomalies consist of unusual encephaloceles, facial clefts, and cranial plus midfacial distortion; the limb anomalies consist of constrictions, amputations, and pseudosyndactyly. These defects are interpreted as being secondary to the early distorting and disruptive effects of aberrant tissue bands, the etiology for which is undetermined. Survival beyond the neonatal period has occurred in four of the five liveborn patients, indicating that early death should not necessarily be anticipated. Recurrence risk is apparently negligible.

Purification of a growth factor for ovarian cells from bovine pituitary glands.

The purification of a growth factor from bovine pituitary glands that controls the division of an ovarian cell line maintained in tissue culture is reported. Extraction of bovine pituitary glands at pH 4.5 followed by ammonium sulfate precipitation, chromatography on carboxymethylcellulose, and gel filtration on Sephadex G-50 gives yields of ovarian growth factor of about 7 mg/kg of glands. Contamination by other pituitary hormones was not detected. The preparation obtained has been characterized with respect to biological activity, molecular weight, and amino-acid composition. The implication of this growth factor in the development of ovarian tumors is discussed.

Biological activity of a growth factor for ovarian cells.

The biological activity of a protein growth factor is described. This factor was isolated from bovine pituitary tissue, and its activity was tested on cells of rat ovarian origin. Activity was assayed as growth-promoting potential measured by cell counts and is concentrationdependent. Similar growth stimulation was not produced by several cyclic nucleotides tested, neither was there crossreactivity between this growth factor and a chemically similar one produced by rat liver cells.

Liver in Felty's syndrome.

Liver function and histology, together with the haematological changes, were investigated in 12 patients with Felty's syndrome. Six of them were anaemic. The red cell mass was either normal or increased, and the anaemia was due to a considerable increase in the plasma volume. Two patients had increased haemolysis associated with red cell sequestration by the enlarged spleens. In eight patients liver function tests were abnormal, while in five the liver histology showed lymphocytic infiltration of the sinusoids and portal tracts together with portal tract fibrosis. One of these was later found to have a macronodular cirrhosis. In another there were apparent nodules without a true cirrhosis, and this appearance was also seen in two other patients with Felty's syndrome in whom histology was available. An increased blood flow through the spleen was found in the two patients examined.

Dysmorphology: an approach to diagnosing children with structural defects of the head and neck.

In dealing with a child with a structural defect, an overall diagnosis must be formulated. Such a diagnosis makes it possible to provide genetic counseling for the parents and an accurate prediction relative to such a child's future development. Because there are a great many abnormalities involving the head and neck, it is hoped that the approach set forth in this article will allow for a systematic narrowing of the diagnostic possibilities. Nomenclature is established. Prenatal-onset defects are described, including both single primary defects (malformations and deformations) and multiple malformation syndromes (chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, defects resulting from teratogenic factors, and disorders of unknown etiology). Genetic and environmental factors of postnatal developmental problems are also discussed.
