Changes in fatty acid composition of triacylglycerols and phospholipids of the hen liver lipid on coming into egg production were described. Of the major fatty acids of triacylglycerols, a high content of oleate and low content of stearate and polyenoic acids were observed in the hen liver at all ages (97 to 167 days of age). In contrast, high stearate and polyenoic acids were present in the liver phospholipids at all ages. The oleate content in triacylglycerols was twice that of phospholipids. Triacylglycerols of the hen liver were more unsaturated than phospholipids throughout the experiment. The triacylglycerols of the control and estrogenized male chicks were also more unsaturated than the phospholipids. The distribution patterns of carbon-18 fatty acids (stearate, oleate, and linoleate) of triacylglycerols and phospholipids in liver lipid were examined. Both females and males showed similar distribution patterns of carbon-18 fatty acids of the triacylglycerols. In the phospholipids, all birds also showed similar distribution patterns, but these patterns were distinctly different from those of the triacylglycerols.
A 60-year-old man with small cell lung cancer who has been alive seven years in good condition after the combined therapy with radiation and anticancerous drugs, is presented. Chest X-ray examinations revealed the right middle lobe atelectasis and lymph node enlargement of the right hilum. Small cell carcinoma (oat cell type) was diagnosed by cytological examinations of the sputum. The patient was given 42 Gy of telecobalt, one course of METT as chemotherapy and PSK (3.0 g X 52) and BCG-CWS (300 micrograms X 29) as immunotherapy.

We treated 64 patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix with high-dose-rate intracavitary irradiation between 1978 and 1984. Of the 52 patients who were followed for more than two years, gastrointestinal complications occurred in 11 (21%): six grade I patients (12%), two grade II patients (4%) and three grade III patients (6%). The patients were graded according to the severity of the complications. The three patients with grade III complications underwent emergency surgery because of ileus or perforation of the gastrointestinal tract. It is suggested that these severe complications are liable to occur in patients given more than seven fractions of intracavitary irradiation in a fraction dose of 6 Gy to point A or previously operated on in the pelvic cavity. Accurate center shield in relation to tandem sources is also emphasized.

Acid lipase activity was found in the defatted liver from the laying hen, but little neutral or alkaline lipase activity was observed in the liver. Most of acid lipase was in the insoluble fraction of the defatted liver, and the enzyme was solubilized by sonication at 9 kHz for 50 min in a slightly alkaline solution. The lipase showed its maximum activity at pH 5.0, 38 degrees C. It was stable below 40 degrees C and over the pH range from 4.0 to 9.0. Detergents, serum of the laying hen and the soluble fraction from the defatted liver homogenate from the laying hen markedly inhibited the lipase activity. The lipase solubilized by sonication was large in molecular mass, suggesting that the preparation formed colloidal particles.
Dorsal, ventral, animal and vegetal half-embryos of Xenopus laevis were isolated at the 8-cell stage, and their synthesis of protein examined during 12 h of culture. The kinetics of the uptake and incorporation of [35S]-methionine did not differ greatly among the four kinds of half-embryos. Two-dimensional gel electrophoreses showed that there were no detectable differences in the pattern of protein synthesis for the four types of half-embryos, at least during the first 6 h of culture which covered the period from the cleavage to late blastula stage. The patterns, however, changed greatly, especially between those of the animal and vegetal half-embryos, during the latter 6 h of culture which covered the period from the early gastrula to early neurula stage. These results are evidence that equal qualitative and quantitative maternal mRNA-dependent protein synthesis takes place in the four types of embryonic regions, including the vegetal half-embryos, although later in the post-blastular stages, syntheses of region-specific proteins start that are dependent on new genome expression.
Correlation between dose and tumor response by cell types was determined in 50 patients with lung cancer in order to predict the possibility of further tumor regression. The TDF (time-dose-fractionation) concept was used as dose factor. The radiation source was a cobalt-60 gamma-ray or linear accelerator 10 MV X-ray. As a routine regime a fraction dose of 2 Gy five times per week was given to 39 of the 50 patients, but a dose of 2 Gy three times per week or of 1.5 Gy five times per week was given to seven and four patients, respectively. Radiation response was the best in small cell carcinoma and better in adenocarcinoma than in squamous cell carcinoma, showing a tumor regression rate of 50% or more in 90%, 80% and 58% of the patients, respectively. The correlation between tumor regression rate and TDF values was good in squamous cell carcinoma (r = 0.73) and small cell carcinoma (r = -0.72), but poor in adenocarcinoma (r = -0.10). These results suggest that in squamous cell carcinoma improvement of tumor regression can be expected by increasing TDF values, and in adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma the optimal TDF values are about 100 and 60 to 80, respectively.

The purpose of this study is to know the systemic distribution of sclerosant injected into esophageal varices. Sclerotherapy for esophageal varices was performed for 14 times in 11 patients. The patients were divided into two groups according to the content of sclerosant. Seven patients received a total of 9 intravariceal injections (IVI) with 7 to 30ml of 5% ethanolamine oleate (EO) which contained meglumine diatrizoate (Angiographin) and four patients received a total of 5 IVI with 10 to 20ml of 4.5% EO which contained a 10% volume of 99mTcO-4 solution (EO-99mTc). Distribution of injected materials was observed by X-ray fluoroscopy in the former group and by a scintillation camera in the latter. In both methods most of the sclerosant disappeared from the injected site within five minutes leaving a trace in the varices. Then, the sclerosant was disseminated throughout the body via portal vein. When more than 20ml of sclerosant was injected, some flowed into the azygos vin through the periesophageal vin. After IVI the varices showed atrophic changes, though the sclerosant did not stay in the varices.

A 51-year-old male with undifferentiated adenocarcinoma of the lung associated with sarcoidosis is reported. Scalenus node biopsy and open thoracotomy revealed sarcoid granuloma. High levels of serum angiotensin-converting enzyme and ocular findings also suggested sarcoidosis. No malignant cells were recognized by repeat lymph node biopsy. However, post-mortem examination showed bronchial carcinoma; no sarcoid granuloma was found. The diagnostically difficult points of our case are discussed.
