A case of sphenoidal ridge meningioma complicating chronic subdural hematoma and a case of malignant astrocytoma producing not only intracerebral hematoma but also acute subdural hematoma were reported, and the mechanism of subdural hematoma formation was discussed according to the literature. Malignant glioma often produces intracranial hemorrhage, but scarcely produces subdural hematoma. On the other hand, meningioma scarcely produces intracranial hematomas, but among of them subdural hematoma is not unusual. The reason for it is probably due to the difference of the place where each tumor grows originally. Rupture of the bridging veins or the intratumoral abnormal vessels due to twisting of the brain from trivial head trauma or without trauma might produce subdural hematoma.
Fourty-one patients with a metastatic brain tumor were analyzed to evaluate the usefulness of irradiation. The radiation was given conventionally 3 to 5 times a week with a fractional dose of 1.5 to 2 Gy. The mean survival times was 5.0 months in all cases. The survival times did not change in a dose of 20 to 60 Gy, and symptomatic response was also not perceived in this dose of 20 to 60 Gy. The condition of the primary disease seems to be deeply related to the survival time. It is considered that radiation therapy for brain metastasis is particularly useful in a patients with well-controlled, primary tumors and dose of more than 20 Gy should be given at least.

Membrane-bound acid lipase was found in the chicken erythrocytes ghosts, having an optimum pH of 4.5. The membrane-bound lipase showed its maximum activity at 38 degrees C, and it was stable below 45 degrees C. The bound lipase was activated by octyl glucoside and 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate (CHAPS), but it was markedly inhibited by chicken serum. The lipase was solubilized with CHAPS, but the solubilized lipase was labile. The solubilized lipase showed its maximum activity at pH 4.5, 38 degrees C, and it was stable below 40 degrees C. The solubilized lipase was activated by CHAPS and octyl glucoside. The lipase was markedly inhibited by chicken serum. The solubilized lipase have a molecular mass more than 230,000 by Sephacryl S-300 gel filtration.

Results of radiotherapy for lung cancer in the elderly were compared with those in younger patients. A total of 129 patients were treated by radiation therapy with or without chemotherapy. Fifty-six patients (43.4%) were 70 years old or more (elderly group) at the time of treatment, and the remaining 73 patients were below age 70 (younger group). Treatment results in the elderly group were nearly the same as those in the younger group in all stages of the disease. Survival time was longer for patients with performance status (PS) of 0 to 2 than for those with PS 3 or 4 regardless of age (p less than 0.05). The survival time of the elderly group was nearly the same as that of the younger group for squamous cell carcinoma, but somewhat shorter for adenocarcinoma although the difference was not statistically significant. There was no difference in survival between the two groups when they were treated by combined radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Our results suggest that elderly patients can be treated as safely as younger patients by radiotherapy alone or combined radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

A cine-portogram is a new diagnostic modality in portal system. The main purpose of this study is to assess the clinical significance of cine-portogram in patients with portal hypertension. Portal hemodynamics have been evaluated by cine-portogram in 28 patients with portal hypertension. Portal hemodynamics have been analysed in the following five main diagnostic findings: portal hepatic perfusion, hemodynamics of coronary vein, dominance of gastric vein or short gastric vein, extension of varices in lower esophago-proximal gastric region, and route of draining vein of esophageal varices. The grade of portal hepatic perfusion has been evaluated in all cases by cine-portogram. Hemodynamics of coronary vein have been evaluated in 78% of patients. Dominance of the left gastric vein or short gastric vein has been evaluated in 84% of patients. Extension of varices in lower esophago-proximal gastric lesion and route of draining vein of esophageal varices have been evaluated by only cine-portogram. In conclusion, the cine-portogram is a new and useful diagnostic modality for the evaluation of portal hemodynamics in patients with portal hypertension.
The proton nuclear Overhauser effects of bovine alpha-lactalbumin were studied at 200 MHz by irradiation of an upfield ring current shifted methylene at -2.45 ppm (assigned to Ile-95) and two aromatic protons, Tyr-103 (8.36 ppm) and Trp-60 (5.85 ppm). The experimental results were consistent with a putative three-dimensional alpha-lactalbumin model [Warne, P. K., Momany, F. A., Rumball, S. V., Tuttle, R. W., & Scheraga, H. A. (1974) Biochemistry 13, 768-782], which predicted the close proximity of Ile-95, Tyr-103, Trp-60, and Trp-104. Several of the assignments correlated with those previously made from chemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization experiments [Berliner, L. J., & Kaptein, R. (1981) Biochemistry 20, 799-807]. Subtle differences in the structure of this hydrophobic box region in alpha-lactalbumin were found between the Ca(II) and apo forms of the protein. The existence of this "hydrophobic box" in alpha-lactalbumin was strikingly similar to that in lysozyme, as verified in solution.

Acid lipase activity was found in the bovine erythrocyte ghosts, but little neutral or alkaline lipase activity was observed in the erythrocytes. The membrane-bound lipase showed a remarkable activity in the ghosts only after hemolysis. The membrane-bound lipase showed its maximum activity at pH 4.5, 38 degrees C, and it was stable below 40 degrees C. The hydrolysis rate was linear with time up to 60 min, and was proportional to the amount of enzyme up to 0.4 mg protein. The bound lipase was activated markedly by bovine serum albumin and slightly by octyl-glycoside. The lipase was remarkably inhibited by bovine serum.
Protein synthesis was studied in dissociated Xenopus embryonic cells whose reaggregation was inhibited either chemically (deprivation of Ca2+) or mechanically (cultivation on sintered glass filter). Under reaggregation-inhibited conditions, synthesis of several proteins was inhibited in neurula but not in blastula and gastrula cells. Under reaggregating conditions, pattern of protein synthesis in blastula cells became 'neurula-cell-type' after 17 h. However, under non-reaggregating conditions, activation of many proteins was inhibited. The inhibition was mostly reversible and similar to that observed in neurula cells inhibited by actinomycin D. Thus, synthesis of many proteins directed by new transcripts at the neurula stage appears to depend on the maintenance of cell-to-cell contact.
