Interaction of endosulfan and metepa in rats.

Repeated administration of endosulfan or metepa or their mixture did not induce any significant histological changes in the organs examined in male rats. Similarly, the activity of different enzymes assayed here showed no significant alterations. The level of endosulfan did not differ significantly in presence or absence of metepa in the samples of blood, brain, fatty tissue, kidney, liver and testis. The observations do not suggest any kind of additive or antagonistic effects or potentiation of each compound in presence of the other, at the doses and duration studied in male rats.

Effect of nickel sulphate on male rats.

Cytopathological and histopathological changes in skin, liver, kidney and testis of rats due to nickel sulphate have been studied experimentally. Skin of nickel sulphate painted rats showed hyperkeratinization, vacuolization, hydropic degeneration of basal layer and atrophy of epidermis. The testis showed degeneration and oedema of seminiferous tubules, while liver showed areas of focal necrosis, congestion and dilatation of sinusoids.

Toxic effects of Iomex on rat after repeated oral administration.

Administration of Iomex, petroleum fraction, at a dose level of 1 ml/kg for a period of 4 weeks did not produce any toxic symptoms in albino rats. At higher doses, however, the animals showed high incidence of mortality, reduction in food and water intake and loss in body weight. At necropsy, lungs were found to be congested and intestines hyperaemic. Histopathological examination revealed slight abnormalities in lungs, liver and kidney. The absolute organ weights decreased (liver, kidney, heart, spleen, lung, gonad, brain and adrenal), whereas relative weights increased. There was a significant fall in total erythrocyte (RBC) and total leucocyte (WBC) counts and haemoglobin content (Hb) was reduced. Increased lymphocytes with correspondingly decreased neutrophils were also observed. Serum and liver transaminases (GOT and GTP) showed enhanced activity.

90 day dermal toxicity of DDVP in male rats.

Exposure of male rats to DDVP (21.4 mg/kg/day) through dermal painting for a period of 90 days did not produce any changes in skin or testis. None of the animals showed any clinical symptoms of DDVP poisoning or mortality during experimentation. Rapid degradation of DDVP and further its detoification in in liver of rats and other species of mammals seems to be the prime reason for the non-toxic effect of the insecticide.

Effect of diazinon in male rats. Histopathological and biochemical studies.

Mild structural and functional changes were observed in liver and testes of rats after a single intraperitoneal administration of diazinon (21.6 mg/kg). Kidney, however, showed no pathological lesion. Attempts are made to correlate the pathological changes in these organs with the activity of succinic dehydrogenase, adenosine triphosphatase and alkaline phosphatase.

Evaluation of pulse polio and routine immunisation coverage: Alwar District, Rajasthan.

During the last decade, India achieved 88% reduction in reported poliomyelitis incidence. However, absolute number of reported cases still remains high. As an added effort to eradicate the disease, the country observed its first National Immunisation Days (NIDs) on 9.12.95 and 20.1.96. The present study evaluates the performance of Alwar district, Rajasthan. Modified 30 cluster technique was used to collect information. Overall coverage in rural and urban areas was 89% and 91% respectively. Main source of information was television in urban and health staff in rural areas. Most of the respondents knew about the usefulness of such special activity and had favourable opinion about the facilities provided. Urban Alwar had 80% OPV3 coverage but, in rural area it was almost half. The reported coverage of NIDs and UIP was found to be conflicting with the study results. The existing "dose enumeration method" of calculating reported coverage was attributed to be the cause. The study emphasises the need to incorporate an in-built community-based evaluation of future NIDs and utilisation of such results for planning.
