Hepatocellular carcinoma detected by iodized oil.

This study assesses the diagnostic value of Lipiodol (iodized oil) and computed tomography (CT) in detecting hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Twenty-four patients who were suspected of having HCC received injections of a small amount of Lipiodol, along with an antitumor agent, in the hepatic artery following routine celiac angiography. CT scans obtained 7-10 days after Lipiodol administration demonstrated HCC in distinct contrast to the surrounding noncancerous parenchyma. In particular, the CT-Lipiodol procedure disclosed many small HCC lesions that were not shown by celiac angiography, scintigraphy, CT with and without contrast medium enhancement, and ultrasonography. Although this procedure may miss very small or highly fibrotic lesions, it is recommended for patients suspected of having HCC and for patients for whom hepatic resection is being considered.

[Combined treatment with intra-arterial administration of oily anti-cancer agents and transcatheter arterial embolization--clinical and pathological study on 2 cases with resected small hepatoma].

Combined treatment with intraarterial administration of oily anti-cancer agent (SMANCS-Lipiodol; copolymer of styrene maleic acid conjugate of Neocarcinostatin disolved in Ethiodol) and transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was employed in 2 patients with small hepatoma. At 3-4 weeks after treatment, hepatic resection was performed. Histopathological examination of the 2 resected specimens showed total cell necrosis; CT and Softex revealed the distribution of lipiodol in the tumor and adjacent regions. This combination treatment showed combined effects, i.e. embolization by TAE, the anti-cancer effect of SMANCS and the selective delivery of lipidol to the hepatoma, especially the area of capsula invasion, the daughter nodule and tumor thrombus.

[A case report of pedunculated hepatoma with very rare remote metastases after the resection].

A 44-year-old woman presented with a tumorous mass on the right hypochondrium, however, no clear tumor was detected. One year later she was found to have an abdominal tumor. Upon surgery, the abdominal tumor was identified as a pedunculated hepatoma arising from the right hepatic lobe and was resected radically. Two years later, the hepatoma recurred as very rare remote metastases to the lung, brain and gingiva, and the patient died of respiratory failure. Autopsy showed no local recurrence in the liver, but remote metastases were present in the lung, brain and lymph nodes. The gingival tumor had disappeared following irradiation therapy.

Large round cell granulomas induced by murine sarcoma virus (Moloney) in mouse brains.

The effect of murine sarcoma virus of Moloney strain on central nervous system was examined morphologically in Swiss mice of different age. A single intracranial inoculation of cell-free virus solution resulted in the induction of characteristic intracerebral granulomas in 82.8% of the newborn to 5 day-old group, in 71.4% of the 6 to 10 day-old group, and in 68.0% of the 11 to 20 day-old group. The mean latency periods to tumor recognition were 16.5, 21.1, and 33.5 days, respectively. The granuloma consisted of inflammatory cell infilrations, reactive gliosis, and richly developed blood vessels. The lesions consistently contained numerous characteristic large round cells. In cases of long-survival, the findings included reparative changes, such as extensive gliosis, withdrawal of inflammation, and a decrease in the numbers of large round cells and blood vessels. These lesions were tentatively designated as "large round cell granuloma." The early foci of the granoloma were composed of proliferating glial cells and large round cells at the subependymal regions. Electron microscopically these large round cells had abundant intracytoplasmic fibrils quite similar to gliofibrils. Numerous C-type virus particles were present in the intercellular nad perivascular spaces, and occasionally budded from cell membranes of the large round cells and vascular endothelia. The large round cells were considered to be reactive astrocytes activated by biral infection. It was conclided that MSV-M was not a sarcomogenic but a granulomogenic virus in mice. Control animals showed no pathological changes.

The quantitative structure-activity relationship approach to the mutagenicity of N-nitrosomethylaniline compounds.

In order to clarify the correlations between the substituent properties and the mutagenicity of N-nitrosomethylaniline compounds, the quantitative structure-activity relationship approach has been applied. The results indicate that the property and the shape of the para-substituent groups influence the mutagenic potency, although this has not yet been verified for the meta-substituted compounds.

Trans-catheter hepatic arterial injection of lipiodol soluble anti-cancer agent SMANCS and ADR suspension in lipiodol combined with arterial embolization and local hyperthermia for treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma.

The clinical effect and safety of Lp-TAE alone and combined with radiofrequency (RF) capacitive hyperthermia (HT) were evaluated in 20 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) associated with cirrhosis of the liver. After the oily carcinostatic agents were administered by Lp-TAE, HT, at a temperature of greater than 42.5 degrees C, was induced for 40 min, twice a week by an RF of 8 MHz for a total of 10 to 38 times. The response rate was 40% in the 10 cases that were treated with Lp-TAE combined with HT and 20% in the 10 cases that were treated with Lp-TAE. The patients who were treated with Lp-TAE combined with HT had a tendency to have better survival rates than those of the Lp-TAE group (p less than 0.099). The main side-effects of Lp-TAE combined with HT were low-grade fever, localized pain, myelo-suppression and liver dysfunction, but these were transient and eventually disappeared.

Separation of benzodiazepines using cholesterol-modified fused-silica capillaries in capillary electrochromatography.

This paper describes the use of cholesteryl-10-undecenoate as a capillary column modifier for capillary electrochromatography. This bonded phase has shown an entirely different selectivity as compared to octadecyl silica (ODS) phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography, specifically in the analysis of the benzodiazepines. This difference serves as the basis for the continuing study as well as the present focus on electrochromatography as a relatively new separation technique. To significantly increase the surface area, etching of the inner wall of a 75-micron capillary is performed using ammonium hydrogen difluoride and is then subsequently modified via a silation reaction with triethoxysilane and subjected to hydrosilation with cholesteryl-10-undecenoate to form the bonded phase. The performance of this capillary is compared with unetched cholesterol-modified and bare, fused-silica capillaries. Efficient resolution was noted for the etched capillary showing the effectiveness of the etching process as well as the selective property of the bonded phase.

Analysis of anxiolytic drugs by capillary electrophoresis with bare and coated capillaries.

The analysis of anxiolytic drugs, including barbiturates and benzodiazepines, by CE with bare and coated capillaries was investigated. Two types of CE modes, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) were employed for the separation of the solutes. Charged, structurally similar compounds exemplified by hypnotic drugs such as barbiturates were separated by both CZE and MEKC. Optimal separation conditions were established by varying the pH, the concentration of surfactant, the strength of the electric field, and the addition of the organic solvent. CZE provided different selectivities than those obtained by MEKC. For the separation of uncharged compounds such as benzodiazepines, MEKC was the method of choice because the structural difference conferred differences in hydrophobicity, leading to the different interaction with the micelle. Separations by CZE and MEKC with plain, bare fused-silica capillaries were compared to those with C8 and C18 coated capillaries. Although for these solutes, resolution and analysis time were comparable in the three types of capillaries, successful separation of more than 20 kinds of anxiolytic drugs as the mixture was achieved by using C8 and C18 coated capillaries as the separation medium.
