The ultrastructure of the accessory sex organs of the male rat. 7. The effect of an anti-androgenic compound, SK and F 22340.

The influence of a potent anti-androgenic compound, SK and F 22340, on the ultrastructure of the lateral and ventral prostate and the seminal vesicles of the rat has been studied. After treatment for 18 days there was macroscopic atrophy of the organs with decreased amount of secretory material. There was reduction of the height and width of the epithelial cells and loss of cytoplasm. The most distinct changes were found in the cytoplasm and comprised a quantitative reduction of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) and of free ribosomes; the Golgi apparatus was reduced and the number of secretion granules were diminished. All the alterations observed are apparently similar to the changes caused by bilateral orchidectomy.

The value of radioisotope renography in the followup of patients operated upon for hydronephrosis.

Isotope renography and excretory urography were perfored routinely before and 3 months after an operation on 21 patients with hydronephrosis. A year postoperatively all patients again underwent renography. Renography is a valuable and reliable method to estimate the results of an operation. By 3 months postoperatively the renograms revealed improved renal function and drainage in 75 per cent of the cases.

Follow-Up Studies↗

Roentgenological findings in cryptorchidism.

Intravenous urography of 78 cryptorchid boys revealed no clinically significant upper urinary tract anomalies. Two boys had a rotated kidney and 2 others a double renal pelvis. One boy had previously been operated upon because of hydronephrosis. There thus appears to be no reason for routine intravenous urography of cryptorchid boys. Forty-two per cent of the boys had spina bifida occulta in the lumbar and sacral spine. One case of asymptomatic congenital cardiac disease was discovered at routine chest X-ray.

Abnormalities, Multiple↗

Traumatic renal arteriovenous fistula treated by ligation and preservation of the kidney.

A case with traumatic renal arteriovenous fistula is presented. The diagnosis was established by selective renal angiography. The fistula was treated by ligation and division of the feeding artery. Postoperative angiography revealed complete closure of the fistula. The aetiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of renal arteriovenous fistula are discussed.
