[Abdominal diagnosis in blood-stasis syndrome].

In order to make the abdomen diagnosis in Blood Statis Syndrome more objectively and quantitatively, some comprehensive quantitative analysis have been done by authors. The chief evidences between abdomen syndrome of Blood-stasis Symptoms and Blood-stasis Syndrome were correlated. The main parameters of abdomen diagnosis in Blood-stasis syndrome have been selected by computerized stepwise regression analysis in 152 patients with above-mentioned Syndromes. They were:Blood viscosity, erythrocyte deformation, extracorporeal thrombosis, platelet aggregation, thromboelastograph, electromyogram, etc. All of these can be used as objective parameters of abdomen diagnosis in Blood-stasis Syndrome to make the further study of it.

[Clinical and experimental studies of royal made ping an dan on treatment of motion sickness].

This paper presents the results of clinical observation and experimental research of Royal Made Ping An Dan (RPAD) of the Imperial Hospital of Qing Dynasty. The clinical results showed that RPAD was effective in treating 343 patients with motion sickness, and their average time for producing effect was 24.1 +/- 13.5 minutes. The total effective rates of dramamine group and Ren Dan group were 69.4% and 67.7% respectively, the latter included 45.7% of basically cured and 55.0% of markedly effective cases. There were significant differences among these groups (P < 0.05-0.01). It revealed that the effect of RPAD was better than that of dramamine and Ren Dan. According to laboratory findings, RPAD had the ability of alleviating symptoms of motion sickness and inhibiting eyeball tremor and improving meningeal microcirculation of experimental animals.

Experimental research on antimotion sickness effects of Chinese medicine "pingandan" pills in cats.

Pingandan was a secret prescription for treatment of stomach upset, nausea and vomiting for emperors in the Qing Dynasty of China. This study was to compare the effects of Pingandan with those of scopolamine and dramamine on motion sickness (MS) and nystagmus. Fourteen cats were tested in a parallel swing (0.22 Hz, 3.9 m/S2) for 20 min, and then in a rotating chair (10 degrees/S2, 20 rpm) for 1-2 min. The effects of scopolamine 1 mg, dramamine 25 mg and three doses of Pingandan 50x, 30x, 10x of 0.45 g/kg were observed and compared to placebos. These drugs or placebos were administered to each cat 30-60 min prior to the tests. The post-rotary nystagmus and MS symptoms were recorded. The Suri's scale for MS severity, Latin square and double blind techniques were used. The interval between any two tests was 2-5 days. It was found that Pingandan 50x and scopolamine 1 mg were more effective than placebos in reducing MS symptoms (P less than 0.01) and suppressing slow phase velocity of nystagmus (P less than 0.05), while Pingandan 30x significantly reduced MS symptoms only (P less than 0.01). Pingandan 10x and dramamine 25 mg had no anti-MS effect. Chinese medicine Pingandan is an effective anti-MS drug.

[American ginseng compound liquor on retarding-aging process].

71 cases with age over sixty were randomly divided into treated group and control group, and observed by single-blind method. 36 cases were administered with American ginseng compound liquor as a treated group, 35 cases were administered with American ginseng liquor only as a control group. The total effective rates of the treated group and the control group on symptoms associated with aging were 88.89% and 68.57% respectively (P less than 0.05). The effective rates of the treated group for Kidney-Yang, Kidney-Qi and Kidney-Yin deficiencies were 85.71%, 100% and 87.50% respectively. The effective rates of the control group were 81.82%, 100% and 61.53% respectively. The above results indicated that the symptoms of Kidney-Yang deficiency in the treated group were improved much better than those of the control group (P less than 0.05). Obviously, SOD activity of erythrocyte and SOD/LPO ratio increased remarkably and serum content of LPO decreased significantly in both groups (P less than 0.001). In the treated group, the functional months of age (physiological age) decreased from 751.77 +/- 5.215 to 743.53 +/- 5.144, the effective rate was 68.57%. It showed that these two recipes both had the efficiency on prolonging the functional age (P less than 0.05).

[Effects of longevity-antihypertensive-mixture on essential hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy].

A study which enrolled 65 middle-aged and elderly essential hypertensive patients with Kidney-deficiency pattern was carried out to evaluate the effects of Longevity-Antihypertensive-Mixture (LAM). As LAM was composed of Kidney-tonifying herbs, all the subjects chosen fell into the pattern of Kidney-deficiency in TCM. The subjects were randomized into two groups: The LAM group had 34, and the control group taking Apocyhum Venetum L. Fluid (AVLF) 31. The duration of medication was 12 weeks. The main results were as follows: (1) At the end of week 4, the supine systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and mean blood pressure (MBP) in LAM group declined from 171 +/- 16 (mmHg, the same below), 101 +/- 6 and 127 +/- 7 to 153 +/- 12, 93 +/- 7 and 113 +/- 7 respectively. At the end of week 12, the supine SBP, DBP and MBP were 151 +/- 14, 93 +/- 6 and 112 +/- 8. There was significance of difference in the reduction of supine blood pressure compared with baseline (P less than 0.001). AVLF produced similar changes in the reduction of supine SBP, DBP and MBP. However, the magnitude of reduction in SBP and MBP was smaller than those with LAM (P less than 0.001). (2) There was no significance of difference in attaining goal blood pressure between LAM and AVLF groups (P greater than 0.05). At the end of week 4, 79.41% and 77.42% were achieved respectively; at 12, 79.41% and 80.65%. (3) LAM had stronger effect on relieving symptoms of essential hypertension and Kidney-deficiency than AVLF (P less than 0.05). (4) In LAM group the left ventricular mass index (VMI) decreased from 114.75 +/- 42.40 g/m2 to 100.39 +/- 36.08 g/m2 (P less than 0.001). The LVMI in AVLF group increased from 117.27 +/- 36.90 g/m2 to 117.68 +/- 38.37 g/m2 (P greater than 0.05). The results supported the therapeutic principle of TCM: Treating patients according to their pathophysiological patterns.

[Hyperlipidemia treated with xiaobu jianfei pian].

A total of 51 cases with hyperlipidemia, who were defined deficiency symptom-complex complicated by symptoms of excessiveness in TCM were studied clinically. The patients were divided into two groups at random. One group was treated with Xiaobu Jianfei Pian (XJP) as treated group, another with Fangfeng Tongsheng San as a control. It was found that XJP was able to lower total serum cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and apolipoprotein (apo) B significantly (P less than 0.001, 0.001, 0.001) while it had markedly improved clinical symptoms. It was also observed that XJP had good effects on the ratios of apoA1/B and TC/HDL-C, and was able to reduce body weight index. All of these were better than those of the control group statistically. These evidences indicate that XJP possesses clinical therapeutic effects on both lipid-lowering and lipid-adjusting, which suggest that XJP may be an effective anti-hyperlipidemia medicine.

[Power spectral analysis of heart rate in qi deficiency and both qi and yin deficiency in patients with coronary heart disease].

Qi deficiency (QD) and both Qi and Yin deficiency (QYD) are most common in TCM classification of CHD patients with insufficiency syndrome. The authors used the power spectrum of spontaneous heart rate fluctuation (PSHF) to analyze the function of cardiac regulation in 30 QD patients and 27 QYD patients with CHD and compare with the control group of 30 cases for discussing the association between different TCM syndrome patterns and the function of cardiac nerve regulation. The main results were as follows: (1) Low-frequency areas of PSHF in QYD (34.15 +/- 11.60%) were significantly higher than those in QD group (26.24 +/- 11.57%) and the control group (27.80 +/- 11.65%). The L/H ratio in QYD (1.78 +/- 0.96) was significantly higher than those in QD (0.91 +/- 0.64) and the control group (0.98 +/- 0.58). The changes of PSHF in QYD could have some relations with the increasing of the activity of sympathetic nervous system. (2) The change in body posture was used as a load test to study cardiovascular regulation in different TCM patterns of insufficiency syndrome with CHD. In control group the L/H ratio increased with the change of body posture from 0.98 +/- 0.58 to 4.29 +/- 0.89 (P less than 0.001), while in QD group and QYD group increased from 0.91 +/- 0.64 to 1.67 +/- 0.83 (P less than 0.05) and 1.78 +/- 0.96 to 1.85 +/- 0.87 (P greater than 0.2) respectively. The results suggested that cardiovascular baroreceptor reflex was decreased in CHD patients, and QYD group was inferior to DQ group.

[Effects of an ever-young pill on decreased intelligence and symptoms associated with aging].

A test was carried out to evaluate the effect of Ever-Young Pill (EYP) on decreased fluid intelligence and symptoms associated with aging. Nootropil and placebo were used as control drugs. Random, single-blind and self-control observation methods were applied. 90 days were spent for the clinical study. 154 older persons were divided into three groups (EYP 63, nootropil 60, placebo 31). The method of measuring intelligence was talking between man and computer. The computerized program was worked out by our department. The measure included eight parameters. A semi-quantitative method was used to evaluate the symptoms of aging. The main results were as follows: In the group of EYP, there were significant differences (P less than 0.01) in speed of calculation (SC, 5.92 +/- 2.5, 5.1 +/- 2.1), speed of digits and pictures (SDP, 24.2 +/- 6.2, 21.7 +/- 6.7), two digits span (2.8 +/- 1.0, 3.2 +/- 0.8) and other two parameters before and after treatment. In the group of nootropil, SDP and SC were also improved significantly. In the normal control's there was not any evident change. In the early declined health group treated with EYP and nootropil separately, four parameters were improved in each group. The best effect of EYP obtained was on Kidney Yang deficiency and Kidney and Heart Qi Yang deficiency Syndromes. In other syndromes, the results were less satisfactory. By using EYP for treating symptoms of aging the total effective rate was 96.8%, nootropil 71.7% and placebo 44.2%. There were noticeable differences in three groups. Those results suggested that EYP was one of the effective therapies for decreased fluid intelligence with aging.

Structural changes in the mouse heart one year after brain exposure to 60Co gamma ray.

This study was conducted to investigate the sequential structural changes in the hearts of C3H male mice 1 to 12 months after brain irradiation. A single brain dose of 8 or 20 60Co gamma Gy was given to the animals at 4 months of age. Degenerative changes in the heart occurred, firstly at 6 months after irradiation, and became progressively more severe at 12 months. The cardiac muscle showed areas of focal myofibrillolysis, myofibrillar degeneration with loss of entire myofibrils, the presence of lysosomal-like bodies, and interstitial fibrosis. Coronary artery degeneration was also found at 12 months after irradiation; the major changes included smooth muscle degeneration with fibrosis, and the accumulation of debris and extracellular matrix. Quantitative analysis indicated that the degeneration of the arterial smooth muscle after 20 Gy irradiation (18.9%) was significantly higher than that of the unirradiated control (13.2%), and shammed control (13.3%) groups, p less than 0.05.
