Malakoplakia of the stomach. Report of a case and review of the literature.

A case of malakoplakia of the stomach associated with well-differentiated adenocarcinoma of the transverse colon was studied by light and electron microscopy. The gross appearance consisted of a slightly elevated plaque with umbilication of the covering mucosa. Histologically, the lesion was composed of submucosal proliferation of histiocytes with the typical cytoplasmic inclusions known as Michaelis-Gutmann bodies. Ultrastructurally, these inclusions had a dense central calcified body and concentric alternating rings. Twenty-four cases of gastrointestinal malakoplakia from the literature, including two cases of gastric malakoplakia, were reviewed.

Ultrastructure of fibroblasts from the comb of the cockerel.

Fibroblasts in the intermediate layer of comb dermis of intact single combed White Leghorn cocks and testosterone-injected capons, all 82 days of age, were divided into three types, namely A, B and C, according to the ultrastructure of these cells. All the fibroblasts in the same tissue from capons were type C. 2. The Golgi complex and the rough endoplasmic reticulum were well developed in type A and type B fibroblasts. The latter organelle in type A fibroblasts was in the form of long parallel cisternae spaced a uniform distance apart, while that in type B fibroblasts was extremely distended, branched and anastomosed, containing flocculent material in the cisternae. In type C fibroblasts, both the Golgi complex and the rough endoplasmic reticulum were poor.

Experimental hematogenous endophthalmitis due to Candida: species variation in ocular pathogenicity.

The ocular pathogenicity of species of Candida other than albicans was studied in the rabbit model of hematogenous candida endophthalmitis by injection of 10(5)-10(8) colony-forming units of Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, Candida guilliermondii, Candida tropicalis, Candida stellateoidea, and Candida albicans (control). At one and three weeks after infection, rabbits were examined by indirect ophthalmoscopy and were sacrificed for culture of eyes and kidneys. With an inoculum of 10(8) organisms, C. tropicalis and C. stellatoidea infected the kidneys but only occasionally infected the chorioretina and never infected the vitreous. Organisms were cultured only rarely from the kidneys of rabbits infected with C. krusei, C. guilliermondii, and C. parapsilosis; these species were never isolated from eyes. The C. albicans control consistently infected the kidney, chorioretina, and vitreous; approximately equal numbers of C. albicans were isolated from these organs. These data suggest a relative resistance of ocular tissues to hematogenous candida infections with species other than C. albicans.

Histochemical studies of delta5-3beta-, 20lapha- and 20beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases and possible progestagen production in hamster eggs.

Hamster eggs at various developmental stages were studied histochemically fro the presence of delta5-3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD) (pregnenolone as the substrate and NAD as the cofactor), 20alpha-HSD (20alpha-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one and NADP) and 20 beta-HSD (20beta-hydroxypregn-4-en-3-one and NAD). All three enzymes were absent from ovarian eggs but were demonstrated in unfertilized and fertilized eggs up to the blastocyst stage. The activities varied only slightly.
