The effect of estramustine phosphate on prostatic cancer estimated by transrectal ultrasonotomography.

Transrectal ultrasonotomography was performed in 44 patients with prostatic cancer before, during, and after estramustine phosphate (Estracyt) administration. In 75.7% of 37 previously untreated patients, the deformity of the horizontal section of the prostate with prostatic cancer was corrected considerably, while in 89.2%, prostatic weight was remarkably reduced. In 57.1% of seven previously treated patients, appreciable changes were also observed in the shape and weight of the prostate. We concluded that estramustine phosphate was effective not only for untreated prostatic cancer, but also, at least in some degree, for relapsed cases.

Virus-like particles associated with intracardiac ganglionitis in 2 cases of sudden unexpected death.

Two previously healthy young individuals died suddenly and unexpectedly, and in both of them there was ganglionitis in the heart, especially near the sinus node. Electron microscopic examination demonstrated virus-like particles in the vicinity of the ganglionitis of both hearts. Viral cardioneuropathy may play a role in the pathogenesis of sudden unexpected deaths and deserves further investigation.

[Laboratory and clinical studies on cefsulodin (author's transl)].

Laboratory and clinical studies on cefsulodin (CFS), a new antipseudomonal cephalosporin antibiotic, were carried out and the following results were obtained. 1. The MIC of CFS against P. aeruginosa showed the peak of susceptibility at 3.13 mcg/ml in the inoculum size of 10(8) cells/ml and at 1.56 mcg/ml in the inoculum size of 10(8) cells/ml. It has a higher superiority as compared with gentamicin or piperacillin and gentamicin-resistant strains of P. aeruginosa were sensitive to CFS. 2. CFS was given to 3 patients with acute pneumonia and 5 patients with chronic cystitis which were all due to P. aeruginosa. Clinical effects were good in 2 patients and poor in a patient with acute pneumonia, and those were good in 3 patients and poor in 2 patients with chronic cystitis. Side effects were not recognized at all.

Genetic relationships between sublines of inbred strains of mice as assessed by mandible analysis.

Genetic relationships between sublines of inbred strains of mice were investigated by using mandible measurements. (1) Canonical discriminant analysis (discriminant analysis with reduction of dimensionality) was applied to the investigation of genetic relationships between sublines on two kinds of dimensionality. As a result, it was made clear that all the sublines of the same strains mapped closer to each other than they were to other strains on the plane of z1--z2, except the sublines of strain AA. (2) According to the result of discriminant analysis, misclassification among the sublines of the other strains was only 0 head/302 head, or 0%, for the male mice and 6 head/302 head, or 1.99%, for the female mice. Misidentification between the sublines of the same strain was also of low rate; that is, 28/302, or 9.27%, or the males and 9/302, or 2.98%, for the females. These results suggested that the mice of the sublines of the same strain might be genetically different from one another. (3) The cause for the occurrence of such subline divergence as this seemed to be mainly due to the spontaneous mutation of each colony after the separation of mice. It appeared that the subline divergence of strain AA might be due to the genetic heterozygosity of an original stock before the separation of mice.

Studies on serum immunoreactive elastase in experimental pancreatitis rats. I. In acute pancreatitis.

A new radioimmunological method for determination of serum rat elastase was described and serum elastase levels were measured in two different stages of acute pancreatitis: acute edematous and haemorrhagic pancreatitis were induced by PDL and PDLD technique in rats. In edematous pancreatitis, serum elastase levels showed a significant increase (P < 0.001) at one hour after induction of pancreatitis. Compared with control rats, whereas the serum amylase levels did not show a significant increase. In haemorrhagic pancreatitis, the levels of both elastase and amylase markedly increased within one hour of induction pancreatitis. These results show that the measurement of elastase level offers a more specific and sensitive parameter of diagnosis of acute pancreatitis than does amylase estimation.

Studies on serum immunoreactive elastase in experimental pancreatic rats. II. In chronic pancreatitis.

In this study using radioimmunoassay for rat, the relationship between the changes of elastase levels and the histological changes of pancreas demonstrated in two different cases of experimental chronic pancreatitis induced by dl-ethionine or PDL technique, and the resulting elastase levels were compared with amylase levels. In some of the Ethionine rats, serum elastase showed a high level, whereas serum amylase exhibited a significant decrease. In PDL rats at 3 days after ligation, elastase levels were higher than in other control rats. In PDL rats at 2, 4, and 8 weeks after ligation, serum elastase levels had significantly decreased, whereas amylase levels had not changes significantly when compared with the control rats. The changes of serum elastase levels in two different cases of experimental chronic pancreatitis showed some relation to the histological changes of the pancreas, while changes in serum amylase levels were not exhibited.
