[Histogenetic considerations of experimentally induced adenomatoid tumor-like nodules produced by sex steroids].

Glandlike structures with intervening fibrous stroma were observed in about 20% of subperitoneal nodules produced in the abdominal cavities of guinea pigs treated with various doses of estradiol benzoate (E) for 3 months. These glandlike structures were composed of cells resembling mesothelium, ciliated cells, cells with mucin in the cytoplasm and cells with a squamous appearance. Glandlike structures similar to those following estrogen treatment alone were also observed in about 20% of the nodules produced in the guinea pigs by pre-treatment with E and followed by combination treatment with E and progesterone (P) for 1 to 3 months. However, the glandlike structures were composed only of cells resembling mesothelium and cells with cilia. Both of these glandlike structures resembled adenomatoid tumors. We therefore conjecture that the formation of gland-like structures in the subperitoneal nodules is the result of mesothelial inclusions and their proliferation, and that some of these mesothelial cells were differentiated into ciliated, mucinous and squamous cells by estrogen.

Estimation of solidification time during casting by use of a heat transfer model.

Time-dependent temperature profiles in dental casting molds were analyzed by an unsteady heat conduction model. The thermal conductivity and initial temperature of the mold greatly affected the heat transfer in the mold. The thermal conductivities of gypsum- and phosphate-bonded investments at high temperatures were accurately measured by means of the hot wire method. From the data obtained, the solidification times of Ag, Ag alloy, and Co-Cr alloy were calculated and compared with the experimental results.

Intertrochanteric osteotomy and total hip replacement for bilateral osteoarthritis of the hip: consideration of the nonoperated-on hip.

In early stages of osteoarthritis, osteotomy produced a satisfactory result with no adverse effects and significant improvement in the nonoperated-on contralateral hip. In many cases of unilateral osteotomy in a group with preoperative radiologic scores above 70, the function was either improved or unchanged in the nonoperated-on hip. In many cases with scores below 70, there was deterioration of joint structure. Bilateral osteotomy is recommended only in the cases with preoperative radiologic scores below 70. Osteotomy was prescribed on the contralateral hip within a short period of time after aarthroplasty. Deterioration occurred in some contralateral nonoperated-on hips when the preoperative clinical scores were high, while improvement generally occurred when preoperative scores were low.

The evaluation of intertrochanteric osteotomy in relation to osteotomized angle and leg-length discrepancy for osteoarthritis of the hip.

A series of 103 joints in 93 patients with secondary osteoarthritis were treated by intertrochanteric osteotomy, and investigated on a nationwide basis. The types of osteotomy were classified as varus, 35 joints (62.5%); valgus, 22 joints (55%). The total number of cases with a combined error of 5 degrees was 48 with varus (85.7%) and 31 with valgus (77.5%) corrections. This indicates that a slight deficiency or excess of angulation does not significantly influence the clinical results. Cases with increased center-edge angle after varus osteotomy or with decreased AHI after valgus osteotomy demonstrated a relatively high rating of clinical improvement. Postoperative discrepancies of the leg length were more serious after varus osteotomy (with angulation of 25 degrees or more) than valgus osteotomies. The clinical results after either type, graded by the method of Tanaka were generally satisfactory.

A new type of hydraulic dental cement.

A new type of hydraulic cement has been developed. This cement consists of a mixture of cement powder and setting agent powder and therefore has only to be kneaded with a little amount of water when being used.
