Radioimmunoassay for carcinoembryonic antigen and alpha 1-fetoprotein in the qualitative evaluation of focal hepatic lesions in Japan.

The combined tests of serum alpha 1-fetoprotein (AFP) and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were routinely performed in 210 patients with focal hepatic lesions on a 99mTc-colloid liver scan in order to determine whether these could provide more useful information that AFP test alone in the qualitative evaluation of focal hepatic lesions. The predictive value of hepatoma with positive AFP alone remained 80%. However, when the negative CEA was combined with positive AFP, the predictive value of hepatoma (91%) with both was greatly increased. On the other hand, the predictive value of metastatic liver cancer with positive CEA showed 92%. The combined test of AFP and CEA may be useful for preserving high predictive values of hepatoma and metastatic liver disease.

Cerebral infarction: a disparity between Tc-99m-pertechnetate and Tc-99m-EHDP images.

A case of cerebral infarction that showed a disparity between Tc-99m-pertechnetate and Tc-99m-EHDP brain images is presented. Serial Tc-99m-ertechnetate and Tc-99m-EHDP brain images showed not only different lesion-to-nonlesion ratios but different distribution patterns. Tc-99m-labeled phosphate compounds may be useful in the estimation of prognosis in cerebral infarction as well as in differential diagnosis between cerebral infarction and cerebral tumors.

201ti scintigraphy in postoperative detection of thyroid cancer: a comparative study with 131i.

201TI scintigraphy was performed to visualize malignant lesions postoperatively in 28 patients with thyroid cancer. The results were compared with those of 131 I and/or 99mTc pertechnetate scintigraphy. Of eight patients who had malignant lesions and no normal thyroid tissue, 201TI concentration was observed in seven, while 131I concentration was observed in only three. All of four patients who had malignant lesions and did have remaining normal thyroid tissue showed concentrations of 201TI. 201TI scintigraphy can be performed without any preparation and may be useful in depicting residual and recurrent lesions regardless of the presence of normal thyroid tissue.
