Seminoma in Klinefelter's syndrome with 47, XXY, 15s+ karyotype.

A 32-year-old man was found to have seminoma of the right testis which had been subjected to orchiopexy for cryptorchism 14 years earlier. The left testis was small and firm, and the patient was further studied for hypogonadism. Chromosome analysis revealed a karyotype of 47, XXY, 15s+ with an extra X chromosome and enlarged and fluorescent satellites on chromosome 15. The satellites were also found in the mother as well as in two sisters and one brother out of his four siblings. Endocrine studies, histological pictures of the biopsied left testis and dermatoglyphic analysis were compatible with Klinefelter's syndrome. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of seminoma associated with the syndrome. Several implications are discussed for the rare occurrence of a germinal cell tumor in Klinefelter's syndrome.

Re-evaluation of hydrostatic pressure treatment for malignant bladder lesions.

We reviewed 50 cases of bladder cancer treated with the hydrostatic pressure technique. Results were encouraging when 1) single or multiple papillary tumors were not located around the ureteral orifice, with a presumed depth of tumor infiltration within T2, I) there was no history of open operations, 3) there was observed activity of immunological surveillance, for example a positive reaction to a tuberculin test, and 4) management of anesthesia was satisfactory. Hydrostatic pressure therapy is not palliative treatment for far-advanced cases of bladder cancers but should be the first choice for new cases beyond the scope for transurethral operations and when indications in tumor and host condition are satisfied.

Pituitary-gonadal function in a female hermaphrodite with congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

A case of a 31-year-old female hermaphrodite with congenital adrenal hyperplasia is reported and some endocrinological studies are presented. After the administration of dexamethasone, the elevated levels of serum testosterone were suppressed, while the lower levels of serum luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone were elevated. Since the virilization was too developed to change the sex role, the patient remained as a male subject without cortisol replacement therapy and underwent a plastic operation to construct the penile urethra.

Phosphorylation of mononucleotides and formation of cytidine 5'-diphosphate-choline and sugar nucleotides by respiration-deficient mutants of yeasts.

Respiration-deficient mutants (Rho-, petite) of Saccharomyces carlsbergensis were obtained by treatment with trypaflavin (euflavine). Dried cells of these mutants phosphorylated mononucleotides to their triphosphates and further formed not only cytidine 5'-diphosphate-choline, but also sugar nucleotides, such as uridine 5'-diphosphate-glucose, guanosine 5'-diphosphate-mannose, etc. The activities were the same or slightly greater than those of the wild strain. These results showed that energy (adenosine 5'-triphosphate) necessary for phosphorylation of mononucleotides was sufficiently supplied by the glycolysis system.
