Constrictive pericarditis with atrial septal defect in children.

Two cases of (1-year-old and 13-year-old) of constrictive pericarditis (CP) associated with atrial septal defect (ASD) are presented. The correct diagnosis was made preoperatively in both cases. Both patients underwent surgery (pericardiectomy and ASD closure). One patient died soon after the surgery because of low cardiac output. The other patient was associated with protein-losing enteropathy and it improved dramatically after the operation. Cardiac catheterization is necessary for the diagnosis of this unusual combination. The cause of this unusual combination is obscure.

Staging of bladder tumors by means of transrectal ultrasonography.

Transrectal ultrasonography is a specially devised technique to obtain clear tomograms of the intrapelvic organs, such as the prostate, urinary bladder and seminal vesicles. We used this technique to evaluate 64 patients with bladder tumors. The results were compared with histological findings after exploratory surgery. Ultrasonograms of these tumors were estimated on the basis of bladder wall irregularity, bladder deformity, bladder capacity and extravesical spread of tumor. Each tumor stage showed characteristic ultrasonic features. Extravesical spread of tumor, which was observed in 67 percent of stage D tumors, proved to be an important finding to distinguish stage D tumours from other tumor stages. We suggest these features as diagnostic criteria for ultrasonic staging of bladder tumors.

Potentiometric titration behavior of polyaspartic acid prepared by thermal polycondensation.

The dissociation behavior of polyaspartic acid prepared by thermal polycondensation was studied by potentiometric titrations at various ionic strengths. From the analysis of the titration curves, the ratio of alpha- and beta-linkaged aspartyl residues was estimated at about 7:3 and the intrinsic dissociation constants of alpha- and beta-carboxyl groups are 3.25 and 4.35, respectively.

Mass screening program for prostatic diseases with transrectal ultrasonotomography.

A special chair-type apparatus for transrectal ultrasonotomography was developed in our laboratory 3 years ago. We did a mass screening program for prostatic disease, using this equipment as the primary study in the system. The 132 apparently normal men evaluated ranged in age from 40 to 76 years (mean 55.0). The 48 patients suspected of having prostatic disease underwent secondary studies, consisting of the usual urological examinations. Prostatic disease was detected in 24 cases, including 18 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Thus, the model program revealed an extraordinarily high prevalence of latent prostatic disease among apparently normal older men.
